Iran is becoming a "Persian peninsula" and no one cares. A gigantic desert country with nothing but sand, sun and heat. Previous governments did nothing and Rouhani is also doing nothing to stop this disastrous development.

Iran, Afghanistan and Iraq have also undergone major losses, having respectively 56%, 54% and 34% less permanent surface water in 2015 than in the first year of observation (Fig. 3e). These losses, which raise serious questions concerning water security and transboundary water management 23, are caused by factors including unregulated withdrawal, dams that change the flow rate and direction of rivers, and droughts 16.

Usually, you don't have much expectations from countries like Afghanistan or Iraq. But Iran's a disappointment simply because you know that they are capable of doing a better job.

unfortunately I call it most critical danger for iran and if they dont do any serious move, maybe it will lead to a civil war in next decades and people will fight for remaining water sources, Massive migration, ...
it will be a mess..

90% of urmiya lake is dried just because they wanted to make a road crossing the lake and divide it
Into two parts..

Current condition of Iran's water resources are alarming but I don't think Iran will face any civil war or major crisis as the result of this drought. As you know Iran is connected to the Caspian sea from the north and Persian Gulf from the south and in worst case scenario they can build desalination plants along the coastlines of the Caspian sea and Persian Gulf. Actually this is the formula that has been used by the Saudis and almost half of their water need is produced through the desalination plants.

Another good news for Iran is that they have access to the nuclear energy and can use it to build nuclear desalination plants which is more cost effective compared to fossil fuel powered plants and can produce huge amount of water.

I've been telling the Iranians this for ages, but a lot of them are sadly too arrogant and proud to admit what's going on in their own country.

Iran's environment is in a lot of trouble, and yet its leaders are doing absolutely nothing about it.

The Central Asian states are also in trouble.

This will simply lead to more political instability in the coming years/decades.

Don't forget that water shortages are part of the reason why the Syrian civil war started in the first place.

Bullshit.

But in the worst case we can supply water from sea like PGCC countries.

Here is map of driest states on earth:

Map is wrong
Area highlighted in India and Pakistan are the most water abundant part

Pakistan : Area highlighted is course of Indus (only green area in nation)

Similarly Area highlighted in India is Course of all major rivers in India + Northeast which receives highest rainfall globally

Water scarcity is increasingly happening in India as well.

Hope Iran does something about it. Best wishes.
