If you were wondering why Iran is so good in rocket science here is the answer!

International Math Olympiad (IMO)—Ranking Countries After Adjusting for Population and GDP

#1: South Korea, #2: Iran, #3: Bulgaria

The top 5 countries remain the same as in the population-adjusted model above: #1: South Korea, #2: Iran, #3: Bulgaria, #4: Russia, #5: Taiwan.

China has fallen to 11th place, USA to 17th.

Each year, the top 6 high school mathematicians from each country are selected to participate in the International Mathematics Olympiad (IMO). They compete over 2 days, with 4.5 hours on each day to solve 3 very challenging math problems.

Even without adjusting for population and GDP Iran is NO1.in Islamic world

This video shows historical country rankings data..in 1997 or 98 Iran became world's no 1..but we have fallen back since then..

in memory of a genious

Iran-born Maryam Mirzakhani remembered as ‘math genius’

Maryam Mirzakhani, an Iranian-born mathematician who was the first woman to win the coveted Fields Medal
In 2014 Mirzakhani won the Fields Medal, the equivalent of the Nobel Prize for mathematics, which is awarded by the International Congress of Mathematicians.

The situation of mathematics in Iran has never been so bad in decades.
This year was an exception to a series of poor performances by Iran at the IMO in recent years, but it changes nothing overall.
There used to be a time that Iran ranked 1st (1998) and 3rd (1997) without "population-adjustment". Iran simply had an amazing talent pool in late 1990s. Many countries were jealous of our talent pool back then. That generation led to the rise of stars like Maryam Mirzakhani and Eaman Eftekhary.

I feel embarrassed about our recent performances to be honest. This year turned out to be good, but 2021 was terrible. In fact it was our worst performance in history. I can't believe that our team could receive only 1 point from P2 in 2021. That's embarrassing for a country like Iran that used to be a powerhouse in IMO. Honestly, Iran's performance in the last 5 years has been nothing but alarming for the future of mathematics and engineering in Iran, showing a dramatic change in the talent pool.

You can not be Champion every year...if you look at the historical video..you can see how countries come on top and go down..But since 1990 Iran is mostly on the top with the best performance in 98 we were No 1 in the world. and do not forget we have always bee NO1 in Islamic countries..

But you can be in top 10 every year. China, Russia and the US have always been at the top of the table.
When your team scores only one point from P2, for a country like Iran, that's a huge problem.
Mathematics and engineering are dying in Iran. Best talents of Iran are now going to biology-related majors such as medicine and dentistry. The number of candidates participating in each subgroup in the Concourse is a clear indication of that. It's now something like 600K participants in the biology subgroup and 180K participants in the math subgroup. It used to be like 500K for math and 450K for biology just 15 years ago.

Iran has tremendous potential, but islam will never let it bloom.
Actually most of Iran's high performance has been in the Islamic Republic era and I am nor a religious oriented person to say that..I have not seen anything In Islam that is against science..the reason moslems fell behind in science and tech is mostly due to the corrupt systems of governance they have had and not the religion..

Those who have actually studdied world history, know that the Islamic world actually lead in world in science for more than 700 years......

To be fair, the majority of science and mathematics in the golden age of Islam came from the Sassanid Persia and Indian mathematicians. India and China are perhaps two of the most ancient civilizations that contributed greatly to mathematics, long before the Greeks.

Aryabhata of India alone was a great source of inspiration for the Muslim scientists, both in geometry, algebra and related scientific disciplines like astronomy. He knew about the Taylor series of the trigonometric functions thousands of years before they were discovered in Europe.

Even in recent history, perhaps the most original mathematician besides Leonhard Euler is Srinivasa Ramanujan, who always claimed that his unbelievable discoveries were inspired by his religious beliefs when he meditated or slept.

Sara Zahedi never won the Fields medal. She won the European Mathematical Society prize in 2016 for her works in numerical analysis. Also, the Fields medal is awarded every 4 years. So, there was no Fields medal ceremony in 2016.

Caucher Birkar (Fereydoon Derakhshani) has really deep contributions to algebraic geometry and Maryam Mirzakhani really was a genius level mathematician that innovated a lot of new problem-solving techniques and ideas in dynamical systems, finally tackling some of the most challenging problems in billiards and Riemann moduli spaces.

most great mathmaticians are born , unlike other fields where experience build competence , brains cognitive ability for complex mathematics start decreasing even after mid 20s

Actually, there is a 3-hour documentary by US/PBS in 3 parts "Islam Empire of Faith" It's worth watching I think it may be available on YT.
Yes I have seen the series some time ago..there was also a BBC series about Islamic science done very well by professor khalili an Iraqi science prof in the UK.
