Iran plans to export 6,000 megawatt-hours of electricity to India and Pakistan, according to Iranian Energy Minister Majid Namjou.

Namjou made the remarks after a meeting with Indian Power Minister Moodbidri Veerappa Moily in New Delhi on Tuesday, IRNA reported.

Namjou said that technical teams from the Islamic Republic of Iran and India will hold meetings to draw up plans for the export of 4,000 megawatt-hours of electricity to India and 2,000 megawatt-hours to Pakistan.

During Tuesday’s meeting, the two ministers also emphasized the need to expand bilateral cooperation in the energy sector.

Namjou, who is on a four-day official visit to India at the invitation of the country’s New and Renewable Energy Ministry, arrived in New Delhi on Monday.

The Iranian Energy Ministry announced on September 11 that the country had exported a total of 5,290 gigawatt-hours of electricity to neighboring countries since the beginning of the current Iranian calendar year (started March 20, 2012), which was a 46 percent rise compared with the previous year.

Electricity consumption has decreased considerably in Iran since the implementation of the subsidy reform plan, which paved the way for more electricity exports to Azerbaijan, Armenia, Pakistan, Turkmenistan, Turkey, Iraq, and Afghanistan.

The subsidy reform plan, which began in late 2010, has enabled the Iranian government to begin to gradually reduce energy subsidies over the course of five years, with low-income families compensated with direct cash handouts.

Iran seeks to become a major regional exporter of electricity and has attracted more than $1.1 billion in investments for the construction of three new power plants.

Pakistan already has experience of the ayatollahs suddenly increasing energy prices when American attention was elsewhere.

No way I am against India importing electricity from anyone in the world. We should instead build an energy corridor for coal, oil and gas. India should not go ahead with this plan. it will create dependency.

^^ Importing from Iran will also force India to pay transit fee to Pakistan ...

Better to gain a good capacity gas pipeline for Punjab, Sindh, Gilgit Balidistan and KPK along with Kashmir to provide gas to industries, house holds and powerplants and encourage local investors in putting their money to make new gas powered plants in Pakistan.

but india want to export electercity to Pakistan...

but india want to export electercity to Pakistan...

The electricity wil be very costly if it is imported from Iran, we will have to pay transit fees in Pakistan and also there will huge losses in transmission. I

It will be better if countries focussed on IPI gas pipeline.

any Indian side news to confirm that we are also importing electricity ?
i don;t think this is good idea to import electricity from Iran..
Becz of transit charge and transmission loss electricity ll be very costly.

They should just supply us the Gas. We can make Electricity ourselves. The transmission loss over this long distance will be too much.

TEHRAN - Iranian Minister of Energy Majid Namjou said that Iranian experts will construct a power plant soon on Iranian border with Pakistan to export electricity to that Pakistan and India, Iran’s IRNA reported.
He said the plan is under negotiations between the two countries’ officials, and will be implemented upon a request made by the Pakistani President to his Iranian counterpart.
Pointing to the signing of a relevant agreement between both countries, Namjou said Iran will export 1000 MWs of electricity to Pakistan based on the agreement. He said Pakistan also has asked Iran to construct CGP and DG small power plants which will be built by MAPNA company once a consensus is reached. The minister also expressed Iran’s readiness to construct another power plant with the capacity of 6,000 MWs with Indian investment to export power to India based on his negotiations with his Indian counterpart.
“Some 4,000 MWs of electricity to be generated will be consumed in Iran the remaining 2,000 MWs will be exported through under water cables to Pakistan and India,” Namjou added.

2000MW is small amount which need not to be imported, instead we can construct our own power plant.
