Iran Planned Cyber Attacks on U.S. Atomic Plants. Report Charges

The U.S. State Department on Monday said it was examining a "very disturbing" media claim that Iran was scheming to mount computer warfare strikes on U.S. nuclear energy sites and other facilities, Agence France-Presse reported (see GSN, Oct. 25).

The Spanish-language Univision television network reported that Venezuela's consul in Miami, Livia Antonieta Acosta, became involved in the plot in 2007 when she was stationed in Mexico.

"We did see the Univision report and are cognizant of the allegation they've made," State Department spokesman Mark Toner said at a press briefing.

"We don't have any information at this point to corroborate it. ... We're looking into it and continue to assess what additional actions we might take."

"We obviously take Iranian activity in the hemisphere seriously," Toner said. "We monitor its activities closely."

Iran and Venezuela have close ties and long histories of antagonistic relations with the United States. Washington suspects that Tehran's atomic activities are aimed at giving the nation a nuclear-weapon capability (Agence France-Presse/Spacewar.com, Dec. 12).
