Iran-Pakistan joint defence projects

Because participating with Iran in defence projects comes at the risk of losing access to American weapons. I don't think they would have sold us Vipers and Falcons if we were co-developing nuclear cruise missiles.

Another even bigger reason are the Gulf states. They would have been very unhappy if we ever did anything that could make Iran militarily stronger.

Pakistani, Iranian Navies Conduct Joint Exercises
Apr. 11, 2014 - 03:45AM |
By USMAN ANSARI | Comments

ISLAMABAD— The Pakistani and Iranian navies have engaged in a four-day joint naval exercise east of the Straits of Hormuz this week in an effort to improve security cooperation between the two neighbors.

The participating Pakistani warships, which arrived in Bandar Abbas on March 5, include the Agosta-70 class submarine Hashmat and the indigenously constructed missile boat Quwwat. They were returning from participating in the Doha International Maritime Defence Exhibition, which was held in Qatar.

Senior officers of both navies also met in the port of Bandar Abbas during the visit.

The Iranian vessels participating are not known, but its exercise with Pakistan follows a similar exercise held with the Omani Navy on Monday.

Iran is also increasing its naval presence closer to Pakistan with the announcement in February that it would build a new base in the Gwatr Gulf, close to the border with Pakistan.

A spokesman for the Pakistan Navy here, Commodore Irfan Ul Haque, said the presence of the Pakistani ships near Iran was part of a “normal visit” at the end of which a passage exercise would be conducted.

Analysts agree, but are unconvinced the Iranian-Pakistan naval relationship will be expanded much beyond the current level.

“These are just routine exercises and good for trust building and not much else,” says analyst Usman Shabbir of the Pakistan Military Consortium think tank.

However, when placed in the context of wider Iranian and Pakistani efforts to improve security cooperation, the exercises become somewhat more important.

“These exercises are of course necessary to build better relations, and now are even more important considering the cross-border attacks by rebels in Baluchistan,” Shabbir added.

Iran-Pakistan relations have been strained over recent months mainly, but not entirely, due to the poor security situation along their mutual border. Iran has accused Pakistan of not doing enough to secure it against smugglers and militants that have attacked Iranian security personnel.

The most recent incident saw five Iranian border guards abducted by the Jaishul Adl militant group in February. One was executed last month, and the four survivors released last Friday, reportedly swapped for eight Jaishul Adl members being held in Zahedan jail in Iran. Tehran claims the guards had been held captive in Pakistan, something denied by Islamabad.

Iranian legislators, however, approved a bill to improve security between Iran and Pakistan. Among other things, the bill deals with setting out areas of cooperation, delegating responsibilities to various ministries and financial issues.

This follows the signing of a bilateral counter-terrorism security pact in February 2013 that involved agreements to counter drug smuggling, human trafficking and terrorism.

Though admitting she is unfamiliar with the “fine print,” Salma Malik, assistant professor at the Department of Defence & Strategic Studies, in Quaid-i-Azam University, Islamabad, said the pact “is a very good development, which was badly needed.”

“Iran is an extremely important neighbor and one time very good friend. Now the terms of endearment have converted into confrontation, and with US and Saudi Arabia as major stakeholders,” she added.

Due to the influence of Saudi Arabia and the US in Pakistan, she is uncertain just how deep this bilateral Iran-Pakistan security cooperation can become. However, she highlights that Pakistan desperately needs domestic and regional stability, and Iran is a part of ensuring this.

“Pakistan wants to have a stable, peaceful and strong domestic set up. We have to have a pragmatic, realistic and solid building of relations with our immediate neighbors, of which Iran is an extremely important cornerstone” she says. ■

Iran has history (post Zia ul Haq death) of transferring Pakistani technology to India, only anti state elements would approve any such proposal.

Hi,

There is no disrespect to the Iranians----so please allow me to speak openly upto some extent----.

The love and effection of Iran is like getting a hug from a BOA CONSTRICTOR----. He will go around you---squeeze the life out of you and the devouver you-----.

Be it Palestine---Iraq---Syria---Lebanon----Yemen. Iran has left death and destruction in its wake---wherever it has interfered---.

Iranian govt is basically a religious fundamental fanatics----Pakistan govt is a liberal govt.

Pakistanis need to look into what happened to the nations that Iran has been allowed to enter-----. The foreign policies of Iran are brainless and without thought. It is as if INFANTS are running the nation----.

Iran choses to make enemies by empty talk and empty threats with the powerful nations of the world----.

Pakistan OTOH tries to make friends with all these nations----for the sake of its survival.

Pakistan needs to have cordial relationship with Iran---. There is no reason to go overboard.

I thought I make this thread because I could not find another one like it.

I am not sure how to start off but I think Iran-Pakistan, as two neighbours, whom have good relations and in general Iranians and Pakistanis have brotherly relations, even in real life (I can testify to this on a personal level), why do you think there has been a lack of cooperation in the defence field?

Do you think the sanctions against Iran were a major reason, or do you think there is politics involved?

Pakistan is obviously an advanced nation in the military field and has good experience in variety of fields, such as in fighter jets, cruise missiles, armoured machines etc and Iran is quire advanced in the air-defence sector, submarine, missiles etc. There is no questions both countries can learn from each other and unfortunately, there is currently a void that could have been filled with Pakistan-Iran joint projects, but sadly there is nothing right now. Many nations undergo joint development in the military, why not Iran-Pakistan?

Don't you think Iran-Pakistan joint projects could also seriously improve our relations and our views on each other?

Which projects would you like to see Iran-Pakistan jointly develop?

The number one for me would be fighter jets obviously. What are your thoughts?

Sorry if I forgot to mention anyone specifically. Anyway, lets keep this thread clean and full of good discussions

I have had many Persian friends during my stay in Canada for my undergrad, must say, Persian culture is extremely rich and Persian as a language shares a significant number of words with Urdu, I used to get surprised myself on this.

Past Cooperation

Sticking to the topic, there is a lot of potential, infact before revolution Pakistan’s relations with Iran were really cordial, while with Saudis, we just had a working relationship. Iran became the first country to recognize Pakistan in 1947, Reza Shah was the first foreign leader to visit Pakistan, In 1965 and 1971 wars all our civilian aircraft were sent to Iran (out of reach of IAF), Iran sent medicine, equipment, nurses during the wars along with Turkey. In 1970’s when we launched operation to crush the Baloch insurgency, Iranian cobra gunships provided cover to Pakistani troops and were sent to Pakistan to aid us in our operations. When after 1965, US imposed arms embargo on us, Ayub Khan mentions in his personal diary that Iran bought planes and sent them to Pakistan secretly , bolstering our military. Iranian forces used to train with ours as we were in the same US camp.

Divergence

However with the revolution, Pakistan buckled under American pressure, Soviet factor came into Afghanistan. Pakistan + Saudi Arabia + US became actively involved, then civil war started in Afghanistan, we supported Pushtun dominated Taliban and Iranians supported Northern Alliance, it caused more diversions. So a number of factors 1) US pressure 2) Saudi pressure: since its main supplier of oil 3) Iranian sanctions 4) Divergent interests in Afghanistan caused the two countries to diverge.

Potential Cooperation

However now once sanctions are lifted, both can cooperate on defence, counter terrorism, make sure Balochistan isn’t used by foreign elements trying to destabilize Iran and Pak, Iran has shown interest to join CPEC corridor, thereby providing it land route to China via Pakistan, China being a energy hungry economy can buy gas from Iran with Pakistan acting as an energy corridor. Its just like the ancient silk route. Hope my answer helps. Regards

I think there is every reason for Pakistan to "RAMP UP " its MILITARY, ECONOMIC and TRADE Relations with Iran. If you have been paying attention to what has happened in last few months , you might have noticed that Pakistan refused their long term Partners and close friends in the GULF to join their military assualt on Yemen and declared neutrality in this Iran - Saudi proxy fight. This made the Gulf countries very angry and in fact the UAE foreign minister threatened Pakistan that this action would cost Pakistan dearly. A threat they followed up with a 75 billion military project with India

Why did Pakistan refuse their long term friends ? Because Iran is extremely important to Pakistan. Iran is not only our next door neighbour, but it is a country with whom we have centuries of social, cultural and historic ties.

Personally, I think Iran is very important to us in Pakistan, I hope we can take this relationship to a new level and with Iran willing to join us in the Silk road CPEC project this reltionship is primed to scale new heights.

I am pretty certain that if the Iranian Govt. showed any interest in this regards, such interest would be immediately reciprocated. In fact I could guarantee such response.

P.S. Please keep in mind that we have some FALSE FLAG People on PDF who claim to be Pakistanis but they are not and they only make comments to hurt Pakistan's interest. Just ignore these jerks.

Iran is one of most natural partners for Pakistan, just think;
Language similarities.
Cultural similarities.
Shared border.
Intertwined history going back to over 5,000 years.
The largest Shia population outside Iran.
Iran and Pakistan's excellent ties, since the modern states started and so on.

Pakistan should jump head first and seek Iranian help and assistance in the SLV field and other advanced engineering projects. Pakistan should bring its nuclear know how to Iran, heck both can leap frog in this field together. Pakistan's armour experts should work with Iran on new series of combat vehicles.
Joint exercises should be held several times a year on the large border we share.

Pakistan/Iran zindabad.

Including the fact that the Pakistani anthem is written in a way that it is understandable in both Persian and Urdu. So yeah I am all in for cooperation between Iran and Pakistan.

.
Well Iran HELPED US DURING 1965 WAR
THEY PROVIDE JETS , AIRPORTS, GAS (PETROL Or DIELSEL) to PAKISTAN
WE SHOULD NOT FORGET OUR RELATION WITH INDIA AND AFGHANISTAN IS TOO BAD WE WANTS A VERY GOOD RELATION WITH IRAN
AND WE SHOULD NOT FORGET IRAN Is GOING TO RISE AGAIN

Including the fact that the Pakistani anthem is written in a way that it is understandable in both Persian and Urdu. So yeah I am all in for cooperation between Iran and Pakistan.
REALY THEY CAN UNDERSTAND our anthem?

Buddy, every nation resorts to realpolitik, Saudis and Gulf states funded a horrid beast like ISIS, which is threatening themselves now, that is why Saudis seek a permanent Pakistani presence in their territory, to defend against an external threat, Iran has done a lot of things, just the way Saudis have done, we have nothing to do with it, its their fight. Pakistan should pivot towards the east, and rise with the rising Asia and act as a energy and trade corridor rather than getting stuck in Middle Eastern Quagmire !!!

Pakistan centrifuge design was passed on to India.
Design copy was confirmed by IAEA, mentioned by former CoAS in his book.
Time line of bharti centrifuge development, followed by Bhutto and her Military secretary organized transfer of Pakistani centrifuge designs to Tehran... confirms about axis of evil.
In recent years Zardari has filled Pakistan's bureaucracy and defence organizations with people fanatically and mentally slave of mullas of Qum.
Unless a purge of Zardari / Baynazir hired stooges is made, Pakistan is at great risk.

Who says India and Iran are two different enemies?
Just in case, you don't know.... Iran has built and handed over Chabahar port to bharti army.
Bharti consulate in Zahedan, was regional head quarter of RAW in 90's.
