QUETTA:

A top foreign policy aide of Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei has said that his country is not trying to sabotage the Gwadar deep-sea port which is portrayed by Western analysts as a rival to Iran’s Chabahar port.

One of the two ports – Chahbahar and Gwadar – will likely become an important link for landlocked Central Asian states to world markets. For this very reason Iran sees Gwadar port with disfavour and suspicion, according to Western media reports.

Ayatollah Khamenei’s aide, however, rejected such reports as propaganda. “Enemies [of Iran and Pakistan] want to destabilise the relationship between the two countries through negative propaganda,” Ali Akbar Walaiti, who is also former foreign minister of Iran, told journalists at Iranian consulate in Quetta on Sunday.

Pakistani cabinet approved earlier this week transfer of Gwadar port to China. Asked about the decision, Walaiti said it was for the people of Pakistan to decide how to utilise the port. “Tehran supports Pakistan’s decisions,” he added.

The cabinet also approved the multi-billion-dollar Pakistan-Iran gas pipeline project despite veiled threats from the United States that the deal would invite US sanctions. However, Walaiti advised Islamabad not to give in to American pressure.

“America has no concern with this project which is very important for the people of Pakistan. Pakistan reject US pressure and go ahead with the project,
” he said. Until now Islamabad has snubbed American pressure on the project.

Walaiti said that Pakistan did not need technological support from US or European companies for the implementation of the gas pipeline project. “Iranian engineers have proven their ability by building gas pipelines in every corner of Iran,” he added.

Pakistan is facing a ballooning energy crisis. And under the Iran gas pipeline deal, signed in June 2010, Tehran will export 21.5 million cubic meters per day of natural gas to Pakistan by the end of 2014.

Walaiti reiterated his country’s commitment to help Pakistan overcome its energy crisis. “Iran has almost completed the work on its side for the pipeline and will now provide assistance to Pakistan,” he said, adding that after the completion of the pipeline the Pakistani government would be responsible for its security.

Walaiti said his visit to Quetta was the final leg of his trip to Pakistan in which he met with President Asif Ali Zardari, other government officials and politicians.

Walaiti also visited the mausoleum of the Quaid-i-Azam Muhammad Ali Jinnah in Karachi. After offering Fateha, he briefly spoke to journalists. Strategic cooperation between two brotherly Islamic countries of Pakistan and Iran is not only for mutual benefit but is also in the regional and international interest, he said.

He said provision of source of energy for Pakistan by Iran is a very important step. “We know that there are some pressure from outside especially by the United States but both countries are determined to continue these kinds of strategic cooperation and also Inshallah in the future we will take more positive steps, especially in the electricity sector, as for the time being only a limited volume of electricity is being transferred to Pakistan.

lets see, how far Pak can survive the pressure and when it yields to it?

A senior advisor to the Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei says Iran and Pakistan do not need US permission for expanding bilateral relations.

Speaking to reporters in the Pakistani city of Karachi on Sunday, Ali Akbar Velayati noted, “Iran and Pakistan do not need US permission for expanding their ties and implementing the peace gas pipeline project.”

The Iranian official said Iran is well-aware that Pakistan is under pressure from the US for the implementation of the peace pipeline project.

“By expanding its relations with Pakistan in all fields Iran, however, will prove that US pressures have no effect on friendly ties between Tehran and Islamabad,” Velayati said.

The Iran-Pakistan gas pipeline, projected to cost USD1.2-1.5 billion, will carry a daily amount of 21.5 million cubic meters of Iranian natural gas to Pakistan.

Iran has already built more than 900 kilometers of the pipeline on its soil and has offered to finance and help build the 700-kilometer tranche of the pipeline on the Pakistani side.

Rejecting reports about Iran’s interference in the southwestern Pakistani province of Balochistan, Velayati said, “Spreading rumors in this regard is a conspiracy by the enemies.”

“The US does not want Muslim countries to unite,” he added.

Earlier on Sunday Velayati conveyed the condolences of Ayatollah Khamenei over the death of more than 100 people in a terrorist attack in the southwestern Pakistani city of Quetta to the Pakistani nation.

Attacks against Shia Muslims in different parts of Pakistan have escalated in recent months and hundreds of Shias have been killed in the country since the beginning of 2012.

Pakistani Shia leaders have called on Islamabad to form a judicial commission to investigate the bloodshed

but if now to maintain diplomacy with USA, Pak steps back?

Gwadar is only an emergency route if ever the Indian Navy blocks Chinese supply via India Ocean. While Chabbar will be now made full operational and a Hub after the news that Pak is handing over its port to Gwadar, I guess.

Possible scenarios are Indian Navy puts a blockade in Indian Ocean and China counters Indian Supply coming from Chabbar sitting in Gwadar.

A big loooool at your post.

I said Possible war scenarios. Since It will be not economically good for China and I am sure China will not come all the way into Indian Ocean to see Indian Navy close to its mainland neither Indian navy will go close to Chinese mainland and see face to face. What ever happens it will happen near Gwadar or near Vietnam.

Intelligent Nations fight their war on 3rd country.

Only Submarine warfare could be close to main land of both the countries.

Pakistan needs to get its policy straight. India has always been keen for the gas pipeline deal as well as has jailed Italians that killed Indians. Indians don't compromise on their dignity like we did with Davis. Its time to learn something and let relations with Iran and China improve. Hopefully Iran will get rid of the mullah.

.

Exactly. Pakistan has always yielded under pressure. Davis is an example of how we surrender on this front regularly. Furthermore another example is the India-Us nuclear deal on which we again surrendered. We have no foreign policy and are keen to surrender to US pressure. Kaira mistreated the minister for this project on US insistence as well. We have been delaying this and electricity rental project from Iran for many many years now. Time to revisit our foreign policy.

Do note it is rare for an unassertive nation to be anything in the world. South Korea, Japan China and even India are all assertive and have shown great economic growth throughout time. We cannot afford to be acquiescing but need to be assertive of our rights and Pakistani dignity. A servile nation invites aggression-that includes the raid US launched.
