Iran Overhauls Strategic Mig-29 Fighter Jets

TEHRAN (FNA)- A Mig-29 fighter jet of the Iranian Army conducted its test flight successfully on Saturday after being overhauled by local experts.

The aircraft which was down for 12 years could experience its first flight after it was overhauled at Shaheed Fakouri air base in Iran's Northwestern city of Tabriz, which took 21,000 man/hour of work.

The Iranian experts spent 24 months to overhaul the strategic fighter jet and mounted three types of modern electronic systems onto the aircraft in a bid to increase its technical and backup capabilities.

A senior Iranian Air Force commander had announced last year that the country had succeeded in overhauling its strategic Mig-29 fighter jets inside the country.

"For the first time in the country, we received the permission for overhauling two Mig-29 fighter jets in Tabriz (air base) and the five-stage overhauling procedures were carried out in two phases in Tabriz," Commander of Tabriz Air Base Mohammad Hellatabadi said in a ceremony in Iran's Northwestern city of Tabriz in February 2011.

Iran has recently made good progress in the air industry and has succeeded in gaining the technical know-how for producing stealth aircraft and drones.

That smoke isn't normal. By the way, didn't we buy new RD-33 engines from Russia several years ago?

If you are talking about the pic then its the smoke which comes out when the wheels of an aircraft touch the ground on landing.

Nope, that happens in a short-field landing usually. And the air plane is still airborne as I see in here, and the wheels aren't even open I think:

normal for MIG-29 (RD-33) :coffee:

Really? o_O

MIg 29's with the older engine are known for their smokey engines...the improved K series does have it reduced but still noticeable... Btw any detailed reports of the changes ?
ALso the article said the particular plane was mothballed for 12 years...hows were the other mig 29's in ur AF doing in this time period?

Smoke has always been the problem with Mig-29s exhaust. Hopefully India's new upgrade to SMT standard will rectify this problem.

bad A$$ fighter !!! :D

shame on designers

Literally bad @$$... New RD-33 engines are not farting so much though... Mig-29K is a delight to watch..

Indian Air force's Mig-29 after upgrade looks so fugly...
