Iran Navy to build aircraft carriers

There really is no point, or weight in this except as a PR statement as part of the "Anti-US" drive.
Iran may be able to pull off a carrier-ish thing from its shipyards..
but it does not have an aircraft.. nor an aircraft within its fleet that it can modify to operate from carriers.
At most, it will end up (if it ever ends up) with a helicopter carrier which may be able to take on a few anti-submarine choppers.

The initial designs for building the carriers have been approved and the process of research, design and manufacture will start soon, Captain Maqsoudlou told IRNA on Wednesday.

The Iranian commander pointed to the Navy's capacities to accomplish the task despite the time-consuming nature of aircraft carrier building.

The Navy has set an agenda to produce vessels of different classes, some of which are being mass-produced and others being under study, Maqsoodlou pointed out.

He reiterated the Navy's ability to upgrade the equipment and systems in its fleet.

Since the victory of the 1979 Islamic Revolution in Iran, the country has embarked on a campaign for self-sufficiency in the defense industry and launched numerous military projects.

Last year in February, the Iranian Navy unveiled its first domestically-manufactured destroyer, Jamaran, in the waters of the Persian Gulf.

The 1,420-ton destroyer, equipped with modern radars and other electronic warfare capabilities, patrols the southern waters of the Persian Gulf.

In January, Iran successfully test-fired the mid-range, surface-to-air Hawk missile, and the Iranian Defense Ministry delivered new cruise missile systems to the Navy.

The systems, designed and manufactured by Iranian experts, are capable of spotting and destroying different targets at sea.

Which makes more sense.. there is technically no need for Iran to asserts its presence via a carrier, especially when it lacks adequate defenses for itself. It must build up its air force fleet into a modern fighting machine.
Only then should it think offensive.

True, but when you think about how long it will take for iran to make this carried then it becomes obvious that by the time they get it they would had become much more advanced.

perhaps.. but priorities should be set, instead of statements on A/C carriers.. and sending ships to US waters.
They should concentrate on making "non-exaggerated" claims about the impenetrability of Iranian airspace.

Persian God King,Iranians have developed good weapon system but by overstating their capability they even discredit their real achievements.It would be better if they call a Corvette a Corvette rather than a Destroyer.Making Indigenous Corvette is also an achievement.You do not need to sex it up.

I dont think iran actually called it an destroyer , it is simply an wrong translation .

Iranians call any non-boat sized war ship "NAV", the old Persian word for war ships and where from the English word "Navy" comes from. So first educate yourself before coming here and ridiculing Iranians the people who invented Navy. The Iranian ship is a light frigate. And the age for destroyers has come to an end. Nowadays modern stealth frigates specially those nuclear powered are the mainstay of naval power in western navies. For Russian which has always been a submarine navy, the mainstay remains nuclear and diesel submarines. I personally prefer submarines too. Ships are fancy but submarines are really deadly.
There is no doubt that if Iran invests enough money they can come up with a light air craft carrier but I believe, it would pay Iran if they invest in developing nuclear and diesel submarines which can project Iran's naval power better and more cheaply than vulnerable air craft carriers.

There's a reason even nations like India, South Korea, Japan, even China, GB and France, either don't build aircraft carriers because they simply can't, or have baby flat-tops, or the carriers are years in development.

- Aircraft carriers are designed to project power long distances. Not every nation wants or needs this.
- They are enormously complicated, hugely expensive.
- They are painfully vulnerable without a corresponding carrier battle group providing defense in depth. This means guided missile boats, and very advanced anti-submarine forces.
- They need to be populated with aircraft that are carrier-capable. Except for Iran's F-14's, which are aged, they have nothing.
