TEHRAN (AFP): Iran has launched a rocket into space carrying a test capsule designed to house an animal, the official IRNA news agency Thursday said, amid Western concerns over Tehran's scientific advances.

The Kavoshgar-4 rocket was launched without fanfare on March 15, the report said, citing the president's office.

The capsule, unveiled by President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad on February 7, is designed to carry a monkey but there were no living creatures on board, IRNA added.

"This important scientific experiment was carried out on Esfand 24 (March 15) by the Iranian Space Agency," IRNA said.

Iran had announced it would conduct the launch before the end of Iranian year on March 21.

The space agency managed to "test the system performance... the launch platform, engine, electronic and telemetry systems and the system of separation" between the rocket and its load, according to IRNA.

Iran, which has outlined an ambitious space programme in the face of Western concerns, put a satellite into orbit in 2009 and sent small animals into space in 2010.

Western powers fear that Tehran could develop a missile capability, masked behind a science programme that could deliver nuclear warheads. Iran denies that it’s nuclear and space work has military dimensions.

Ahmadinejad announced in February during celebrations marking the 32nd anniversary of the 1979 Islamic revolution that the capsule would be tested before carrying a monkey into space.

The Kavoshgar-4, also unveiled in February, has been touted as capable of carrying a payload to an altitude of 120 kilometres.

IRNA confirmed on Thursday that tests of data and imagery transmission were conducted at this altitude.

Iran launches new bio-capsule into space
IRAN: Scientists launch first 'bio-capsule' to test whether craft can sustain life in orbit | Babylon & Beyond | Los Angeles Times
TEHRAN, March 17 (Xinhua) -- Iran has launched a new bio- capsule into space with its Kavoshgar-4 (Explore 4) rocket, the official IRNA news agency reported on Thursday.

The aerospace researchers of Iran's Space Organization launched the capsule on Tuesday, the media bureau of Iran's presidential office was cited as reporting by IRNA.

The purpose of the launch of the test-capsule was to study the performance of the system and the sub-systems of programming, said the report.

The capsule was also developed to conduct some important scientific experiments, including the test of the launch pad, engine of the rocket, electronic and telemetry systems, separation system of engine from the prow, sensors, parachutes, ranging and heating systems, according to the report.

In February 2010, Iran said that Kavoshgar-3 (Explore 3) rocket carrying its first "experimental capsule" was successfully test- fired carrying a rat, two turtles and worms.

However, the report did not elaborate on the living creature(s) in the new experiment.

GRATZ IRAN :yahoo:

Iran should be forming solid ties with countries they can trust Unlike Russia , Iran in my opinion , only real friends it has is China, Turkey, Pakistan, and India

. . .
Your right Iran can only Trust China , Turkey, Brazil, Pakistan and Russia only does things for money they no longer hold the Honor and prestige the Soviet Union had.

The Kawishgar-4 is a sounding rocket, and we should be expecting only enough juice to act a suborbital vehicle, or with very small payloads, into leo. Perfect for studying subsystems as they develop.

This is the relevant part of the piece:
The purpose of the launch of the test-capsule was to study the performance of the system and the sub-systems of programming, said the report.

The capsule was also developed to conduct some important scientific experiments, including the test of the launch pad, engine of the rocket, electronic and telemetry systems, separation system of engine from the prow, sensors, parachutes, ranging and heating systems, according to the report.

Makes you wonder if they are testing the 'capsule' (fairings+payload+sensors+employment mech. etc) and all these subsystems now, what were they doing with the bigger and better K-3 and Safir launches!

I definitely believe there would be an Iranian manned space mission around 2020.

Best wish for Iran.

I prefer "Zionist Regime Jew", thank you very much. You talk about "we" a lot i noticed, why are you in a free country like Canada when you are clearly a sociopath lunatic who should be living in Iran with the rest of your kind?

Proper title should be "Iran launches sounding rocket with toy monkey".
