A consortium of Iranian, Indian and South Korean companies seeks to set up an energy park in Iran’s Khuzestan province in a project worth $10 billion, including generation of 1,000 megawatts of solar power, the IRNA news agency says.

Enterprise Company has also proposed to build gas-powered and combined cycle plants to produce 600 megawatts of electricity, Suresh Sharma, coordinator and head of GTPP Oil and Gas, said.

Iranian project owners have announced readiness to undertake 30% of investment and the foreign side to provide the rest of the funds, an IRNA reporter told Press TV.

Representatives of the consortium visited provincial authorities on Sunday to outline their plans, the news agency said.

The project is part of Iran’s bid to establish 5,000 megawatts of renewable capacity in the country which relies on fossil fuels for 85% of its electricity.

Renewables currently account for less than 14% of the country’s energy mix which mainly come from hydro plants but a lingering drought is reducing their production.

Iran is the biggest producer of electricity in the Middle East, generating over 70,000 megawatt-hours.

I hope this project go ahead in full force.

1000 MW solar city, that is so huge. If I'm not wrong, it would become the largest solar plant in the world.

Great news. We also have a considerable amount of "Dasht" in which we can use such solar system. Iran has an incredible amount of potential to use the sun as source of energy. If really invested in, we could easily use such energy for a good portion of our energy needs.

August 26 (SeeNews) - German-Iranian renewables firm Development Environment Arvand Co has agreed to construct a 48-MW wind park in Iran’s southwestern province of Khuzestan, Bloomberg said Tuesday.

The scheme is estimated to require a total investment of about EUR 40 million (USD 45.9m) and the required funds will be secured by means of private capital from German sector payers, project manager, Frank Riesbeck, was cited as saying in a phone interview with the news agency.

Under the terms of the agreement, the wind farm will be located in the Arvand Free Trade Zone. It will use wind turbines made by Denmark’s Vestas and Chinese peer Xinjiang Goldwind Science & Technology, both of which will start shipping the equipment in January 2016.

The wind park is expected to kick off operations by the middle of next year, according to the report. At present, Development Environment Arvand’s project pipeline in Iran amounts to 300 MW. These schemes are scheduled for completion by end-2018.

Iran aims to boost its installed renewable energy capacity from just 150 MW at present to 5 GW in the coming years in order to lower its dependence on oil. Trying to help achieve the target, the local government has recently increased the feed-in tariff (FiT) for such projects, Bloomberg noted.
