Iran in drive to encourage couples to have more children

Iran has launched a house-to-house health education drive to persuade couples to have more children in a move aimed at engineering a baby boom and more than doubling its population.

The health ministry is deploying some 150,000 officers to promote the benefits of marriage and urge single-child couples to expand their families.

Medical faculties in the country's universities have also been instructed to introduce courses on increasing the population, which will be closely monitored by health ministry officials.

The initiative reverses a 20-year state-sanctioned birth control policy that afforded easy access to a range of contraceptive measures – including vasectomies and condoms – and provided statutory family-planning to newly-weds.

Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, Iran's supreme leader, ordered the abolition of the £10 billion family planning budget last year after labelling the policy a mistake and calling for the country's population – currently around 75 million – to rise to 150 million.

Mohammad Ismail Motlagh, general manager of the health ministry's family, school health and population programme, said the main goal was to encourage couples to avoid producing single-child families, which he said was leading to "social and emotional problems".

"In the marriage training course, we have focused more on the child-producing because the single-child issue has caused so many problems and provoked much debate," he told the semi-official Fars news agency.

"For this reason, I am suggesting that families should have more than one child and reduce the gaps in pregnancy to only two years. If the pregnancy gaps exceed two years, couples should revise their methods and make plans in this regard."

Iran originally introduced family planning following a population explosion in the wake of the 1979 Islamic revolution. The programme has been criticised by President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, who has said it weakened the country ability to compete with the West.

What a bunch of ******* retards we have in charge

Thankfully nothing will change. Iran's TFR is now lower than that of Denmark and it's falling every year.

Although you never know what hezbollahi families might do. The least educated and the poorest of every society will always have the most number of children and it doesn't help that in Iran, this demographic also happens to be the regime's favorite demographic.

"child-producing", "reduce the gaps in pregnancy to only two years"

Sickening

We have similiar policies. Our Pm says " 3 children at least". There is nothing wrong with it.

"child-producing", "reduce the gaps in pregnancy to only two years" Using this type of terms are just wrong. Regarding women as a child producing machine. As a government official, Mohammad Ismail Motlagh should have used a proper language.

2-3 year gaps in pregnancy is pretty good , having more than 2 children is not so good.
2-3 year gaps made the children to be in he same age group and made them to be good friends for each other , thy can play with each other and raise with each other. but if the number of the children raise then it made problem for the family finance and made it harder for the family to communicate with children , understand them and raise them

In order for a culture to maintain itself for more than 25 years Required Fertility Rate is "2.11 ".
Thas why our PM says "3 childrens"

Iran: 1.83 Turkey: 2.14

well I don't know , but honestly I support two children not like Chinese one children policy which is too harsh and unnatural
believe if you had a two child policy , the accidental 3rd children that is bound to happen is compensating for any loss of life and also give the community a healthy growth rate

Do you realise who the intended audience is for this video?

Not surprised about Canada, our news service already talked about the number of seniors (65+) have surpassed the number of children (everyone under 18).

They don't have a choice at this moment. If they do nothing they face the same conditions as India or try to manage it until there is sufficient resources.

And now we have to be proud that we have a fertility rate as low as european countries?! so that we too have a demographic nightmare like japan(with very high elderly population),the only reason that western countries have been able to sustain this problem was because of immigration from 3rd world countries to these countries.
I see the same problem within some of my family newer generation, they claim that they are intellectual and elite of this society and know everything(in reality they know as much as a cow and their only concern is to have fun) and say that marriage is a bondage and it is for omols, who needs a child?! So this is how Iran middle and high class society are committing suicide.
Every Iranian family needs to have at least two child so we can sustain current population and demographics, all of our neighbors have a higher fertility rate, this will be to our disadvantage.Iran should have at the very least about 100 million population, Iran is very large and yet most of the population is concentrated in and around tehran we have to make plans on increasing population of other regions of Iran(although balouchestan, parts of golestan and to some extent kordestan have a higher fertility rate)
