Iran criticizes EU selective policies on human rights

Iran’s Foreign Ministry spokeswoman has criticized the European Union’s double standard policies on the issue of human rights.

Speaking about EU foreign policy chief Catherine Ashton’s “unofficial and uncoordinated” meetings in Tehran, Marzieh Afkham said on Monday that the European bloc pursues selective political and double standard approaches to the important issue of human rights.

“Such measures will lead to an increase the suspicion of our citizens with regards to the West and will not help [improve] relations between Iran and the European Union,” Afkham added.

Contacting a country’s civil society provided that it does turn into meddling in the internal offers of that state and so long as the values and customs of said state are respected is a well recognized principle of foreign policy, said Afkham.

The Iranian spokesperson said Iran sent an official note of protest to the Austrian Embassy in Tehran over the matter.

Heading a politico-economic delegation, Ashton arrived in Tehran on Saturday and met with senior Iranian officials, including President Hassan Rouhani and Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif.

The EU foreign policy chief held a meeting with some human right activists in Tehran.

Ashton’s trip comes upon a January invitation by the Iranian foreign minister.
