Iran Blocks Jundollah Cell Infiltration at Southeastern Border

TEHRAN (FNA)- Iranian security forces smashed a Jundollah cell as it was trying to infiltrate Iran's Southeastern borders in Sistan and Balouchestan province, Lieutenant Commander of Iran's Border Guards Amir Ahmad Geravand said on Wednesday.

"The Jundoshaytan (Jundollah) had planned to enter the country some days ago via Mirjaveh (border point in Sistan and Balouchestan province) but our vigilant border guards (confronted and) defeated them in a successful operation," Geravand said in Tehran today, adding that the terrorist group also carried 300kg of drugs which was seized by the Iranian forces in the operation.

Jundollah has claimed responsibility for numerous terrorist attacks in Iran. The group has carried out mass murder, armed robbery, kidnapping, acts of sabotage and bombings. They have targeted civilians and government officials as well as all ranks of Iran's military.

Former Jundollah ringleader Abdolmalek Rigi was arrested by Iranian intelligence forces in February 2010 and executed in June for 79 counts of crime, including manslaughter, armed robbery, bombing operations and armed attacks on security officers and civilians.

In one of the worst cases, the terrorist group killed 22 citizens and abducted 7 more in the Tasouki region on a road linking the southeastern city of Zahedan to another provincial town.

Elsewhere, Geravand underlined Iranian borders' full security, and said the country spends noticeable sums of money to this end.

"The credit allocated in the current year for strengthening and safeguarding the country's borders has approximately doubled compared with the last year," he said.

Iran lies on a major drug route between Afghanistan and Europe, as well as the Persian Gulf states. Since the 1979 Islamic Revolution, the Iranian police have lost more than 3700 of their personnel in the country's combat against narcotics.

According to official estimates, Iran's battle against drugs cost the country around $1 billion annually. Strategies pursued by Tehran include digging canals, building barriers and installing barbed wire to seal the country's borders, specially in the East.

Iran has recently established a central database and strengthened police-judiciary cooperation in a new effort to combat organized crime and cross-border insecurity.
