inventing the invisible | Herald Sun Richard Berry Blog
War is the mother of Invention. I wish she wasn’t, but we’ve shown ourselves to be much better at coming up with ways to end, rather than save, lives. I suppose it’s what makes us us. We’ve been like this since we had hands and feet.

And now we have an invisible tank, well we don’t but the British do, but that’s ok because we’re on their side, at the moment.

Yep, British military chiefs have announced that they have worked out a way to cloak a tank using cameras and projectors. As I understand it the cameras take footage of the area behind the vehicle and it’s then screened on the other side of the tank, so yeah it appears that 30 tonnes of metal isn’t there.

“This technology is incredible,” a soldier who was at the trials (there were trials?!) says.

“If I hadn’t been present I wouldn’t have believed it. I looked across the fields and just saw grass and trees - but in reality I was staring down the barrel of a tank gun.”

Christ. This is the scariest thing I have ever heard.

The tank is expected to be operational by 2012. The man behind the technology Professor Sir John Pendry, of Imperial College London wants to go one step futher.

“The next stage is to make the tank invisible without them - which is intricate and complicated, but possible,” Pendry says.
BTW, if you follow the link you will see an interesting picture.

oo my goodness....means an advance form to be stealth isn't so....

Why make only Tanks invisible....with this technology they can make whole army invisble.!!!

The thing is it’s no gimmick as the British army claim to have made a tank actually disappear! Now a magician might say that they used mirror, but in actual fact a heap of cameras and projectors were used to cause the disappearing act. Images of the surrounding landscape were projected on the tank ,so although you were looking straight at it, you would actually see a continuation of the landscape.

I think they should also try project an image of a BIGGER tank onto a small tank to scare enemy away.Or just a bigger cannon for those with low self esteem.

Reminds me of a joke I once heard about the "invisible" Stealth Bomber:
Commander to Air Traffic Controller: Can you see any enemy planes?
Air Traffic Controller to Commander: No but there are 2 guys in a sitting position at 30,000 feet.
