I have been reading and watching the construction of Padma Bridge foundations from different sources, and was always worried about what is the pile system under the piers (pillars). After watching this video I have concluded the system is sound because the piles have not been driven a straight vertical. This is what I feared.
Jamuna Bridge piers have been driven inclined with a certain angle (6m vertical : 1m lateral). Contrary to what I thought, the video above somewhere shows that the Padma piles also have been driven slanted. This is necessary to withstand the force exerted by about 100km/hour flow of water during the flood season. In Jamuna, this speed is about 140km/hour, in comparison. Both the speeds put a very high pressure on the piers/piles that cannot be withstand either by straight or narrow pipe piles.
