I see this as a tuss competition between China and Japan for influence in South East Asia. It seems to me Japan made smarter move by starting this project compare to the project rail way connect SEA to China in which Vietnam refused to participate. If this project go to operation Singapore, Malaysia, and Indosia will not gain any when transportations between East and West will be used on land which more secure, fast and manageable.

China did not make smart move over dispute some rocks which they believe will benefit them with large oil reserve and help them control scs one of busy shipping route. The move got back fire, not only they lost Vietnam as an ally with strategic locations, they also invited U.S come to their door and wake up Japan nationalism as well.
