International Mathematical Olympiad 2015 results (India crashes and burns again)

Many Indians here have bragged too much about their Maths, such as the invention of zero and a Math powerhouse in ancient times. But really if they do not care about these Olympiads because it does not give them benefits then how come the rest of the world care? And no, a huge population does not guarantee a top spot. East Asians have the highest IQ, that's why South Korea and Japan score much higher than India despite having a much lower population. The reason US often rank amongst the top 5 is because their team has East Asians.

Because that is how Indian psyche works. A seat in a top school in India means, direct ticket to some of top schools in US or a job in Google or Facebook with a salary of USD 200,000.

There are some students who are interested in IMO, but unfortunately they too are forced due to huge competition for a seat in top schools. You cannot let you mind wander on other matters if you want to get a seat in IITs or top Indian schools. The competition to these schools is so tough that student prepare for almost 4 years for the exam. 500,000 student compete for 10,000 seats in IITs.

While it's unfortunate that China did not take the top spot this year, it was barely defeated by the U.S. team, which is 1/3 Chinese anyway.

However, one pattern that did not change was the pitiful performance of that other "gigacountry", India. Time and time again, India falls flat on its face in any kind of impartially adjudicated international competition. Why is this? Indian blowhards would have us believe that their backwater is home to the world's greatest ubergeniuses. Yet these ubergeniuses rarely seem to come through when it matters. Come on guys, the jig is up. You can't even assemble a more competent math team than tiny Macau.
When it matters as you have said is the question. Does this matter? Maybe to u ...

I remember math olympiad during my schooldays.... eligible people (10th) couldn't participate as it usually exam time at least for CBSE board.... is it still so?

.
When I was in school I never heard this Olympiad and all my classmates probably never heard too. only thing we cared is to get seat in top engneering college or medical school. So I will presume same goes to most of india too

Whenever India scores so badly in certain events, Indians will say India does not care. Same with the Summer Olympics, they try hard to get gold in certain sports but when compared to China in the medal table. Indians will simply say they don't care about Olympics
We do care about Olympics , but Olympics is all about preparation and spending money. In the last few years money had been spent on a few areas and we have seen some medals and not 0 as in the past

No Jews have highest IQ. Then Indians and Pakistanis ( but Pakistanis less nowadays because they are Arabs... OK take a joke guys) then you have mongoloids.

The fox and the grapes, my friend.

This is surprising; Iran, Syria, Russia, Canada, Mexico, Hungary all topped Pakistan.
If that's not messed up than idk what is.

Why is that surprising? Since when are Pakis supposed to be smart? They are not considered smart in the UK.

Indians often talk about studying so much for IIT hence why they suck at IMO. Chinese students not only ace the IMO, they study and take the toughest college entrance exam in the world at the same time, and still get into Tsinghua or Peking University, both schools are exponentially tougher to get into than the so called IITs and are better ranked than any top Indian schools by at least several hundred places in any international rankings.

Chinese students don't make excuses such as having to study to get into Tsinghua and Peking Univ., therefore not enough time to compete in IMO. They do both, and ace both.

I would say Indians are relatively better at quantitative subjects such as maths than at soft subjects such as languages.

Is that why an average India speaks 1.7 language ? ............. most Indian I know speak at least 3 languages or more.

My Maid speaks 3 languages :cheesy:

Exactly. All of the students at these olympiads have to simultaneously keep up with their usual schoolwork and college prep in addition to their olympiad training. "Indians are too busy studying for IITs" isn't a valid excuse.

.
To be fair, a country with India's huge population, I expected India to be much higher. Either Indians genuinely don't care much for these Olympiads or they have some serious work to do.

People in India are busy trying to better their lives than take part in silly olympics :disagree:

No kid will waste his time on preparing for any kind of Olympics in India. Sports or Maths.

No parent will encourage his kids to waste his time on a global dick measuring contest. The education sector in India is so fiercely competitive that most kids have a single focus on getting into the right graduate school or the right post graduate school, or a university in the US. (GRE, GMAT)

How many sports Olympics gold has India ever won ? its because no one gives a $hit. I certainly don't.

your right no Indian care about this type exam which benefits nothing

Probably the kids are busting their @$$ with IIT JEE preparation. In general they'll never take their sights off JEE for anything. I'm guessing the best gave it a miss.

No, some people think it's good 'practice' for JEE. But they don't take it seriously coz for JEE you have to prepare for chem and physics. Focusing only on math is something most people don't wanna do.

.
@Guynextdoor2. yup but everyone don't know about it and add to it parents will not encourage there children to this type exam which benefits nothing and state also holds exam like CET AND COMMADE K like in my state for choosing college .and yes they have to study other than maths for cracking this type of exam so overall they don't care about Olympiad type exam

It's very prestigious if you win it, but risking a JEE for a distant shot- no one will do it. And I this is only gonna get worse. JEE is a 2 stage test now and will keep the students busy for the entire year, they can't even 'phase' their studies.

In the US if you make a big splash here, you'll probably get through to Harvard. But you won't have any such advantages here. Whether you win the Olympiad or not, you miss IIT if you don't come out tops in JEE. As simple as that.

Don't care

Not at all, I am from IIT, when I was writing IIT exams these Olympiads or PISA exams never crossed my mind. The same thing with my classmates too. Indians will not work hard on things that won't fetch them profits. Good scores in Maths Olympiads will fetch you nothing.

Off course Maths Olympiad are held in India, but they are not popular. Most don't know, even if they know, they will give it a pass.

Exactly nor even a single one of my friends knew about this PISA or IO shit
