WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The U.S. military shot down a target ballistic missile over the Pacific on Friday in the widest test of its emerging antimissile shield in 18 months, the Defense Department announced.

The Pentagon's Missile Defense Agency said it had successfully completed an important exercise involving the launch of an improved ground-based interceptor missile designed to protect the United States against a limited long-range ballistic missile attack.

The test results will help improve the performance of a multibillion-dollar shield against the type of long-range ballistic missile that could be used to attack a U.S. city with a weapon of mass destruction, the agency said in a statement.

Officially, the $85 million test was designed to collect data rather than shoot down the target.

It was the first involving a live target since interceptor rockets failed to leave their silos during tests in December 2004 and February 2005.

It was also the first since the ground-based system, which is part of a layered shield that includes naval and aerial components, was activated to guard against ballistic missiles test-fired on July 4 and 5 by North Korea.

Boeing Co. is prime contractor for the ground-based mid-course defense. Major subcontractors include Lockheed Martin Corp., Northrop Grumman Corp. and Raytheon Co..

In the exercise, a target missile was launched from Kodiak, Alaska. And for the first time, the ground-based interceptor missile was launched from Vandenberg Air Force Base in central California. Previous launches have been from the Kwajalein Atoll in the Marshall Islands.

off course second this is nothing more then propogenda .As they are willing to share this info really fast and not keep it classified.THERE IS NO WAY TO SHOOT A BULLET WITH A BULLET.:what1:

Yes there is. All you need to know is where the bullet will hit and then with accurercy, deflect/destory it with another bullet.;)

About a quarter of a century ago I was very impressed to read of missile trials where a Seawolf ( I think) missile was fired at , and hit, a 5" shell fired from an American ship. Despite the fact that the US observers were highly impressed with the tests they did not buy the Seawolf system.

this is nothing more then B.S.now that most countries usa threatend with nukes or missiles are starting to develope there own Americans are making all sorts of claims to be able to destroy the missiles in space before it hits.and for your information most states that have the capablility to launch missiles at usa also have the ability to launch misslies with multiple war heads to fool the interseptor.oh yes we also must not forget new kinds of misslies that can change route while in flight so there goes your theory of knowing where its going to hit.:read:

The ABM research program is still in early stages and we can't just dismiss these reports by simply declaring them as a propaganda without any proof.

Things will change a lot after a decade or two when ABM system technology will mature immensely.

Remember the history of Tanks and even Aircrafts?

The first ABM system used was Patriot 1 in 1991 Gulf War. Now, US military has Patriot 3 ABM Systems.

So, things are progressing fast but every program takes time to mature.

I agree with ya 100%.
US Officials: Russia Tests Long-Range Ballistic Missile
Russia has conducted a test of a long-range missile with a new jet-powered last stage, The Washington Times quoted US intelligence officials as saying Monday.

The officials think the move is aimed at the US plans to deploy a missile-defense system against long-range missiles.

The flight test of the road-mobile SS-25 intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) took place from a launch site in central Russia two weeks ago. It was tracked to an impact area several thousand miles away on the Kamchatka Peninsula.

US officials said the missile's flight took an unusual path: Its last stage was a high-speed cruise missile that flew within the Earth's atmosphere at an altitude of about 100,000 feet.

"It looks like the Russians were testing scramjet technology," a official said.

A "scramjet", short for supersonic-combustion ramjet, is a high- powered jet engine capable of reaching speeds of five times of the speed of sound.

The SS-25 ballistic missile has three stages and a post-boost vehicle carrying the warhead. It has a maximum range of more than 7,000 miles.

Citing a policy of not discussing intelligence matters, Pentagon spokeswoman Cictoria Clarke declined to comment on the Russian missile test.
