| By admin SOURCE: RAUNAK KUNDE / NEWS BEAT / IDRW.ORG India’s most powerful warship, aircraft carrier INS Vikramaditya will soon be getting Indo-Israeli developed next-generation long-range surface-to-air missile (LR-SAM) with an Interception range of 70 km soon said latest media report. INS Vikramaditya which was inducted in 2014 in Indian Navy initially came without any close-in weapon system for protection against enemy aircraft, missile and rogue drones but instead relied on the battle group of frigates, destroyers, and other ships to provide aerial cover for the ship but in minor refit in 2015, aircraft carrier received first four AK-630 which is a Soviet and Russian fully automatic naval close-in weapon system based on a six-barreled 30 mm rotary cannon. INS Godavari (F-20) which was decommissioned on 23 December 2015 in Naval Dockyard Mumbai provided INS Vikramaditya its short-ranged Barak-1 intercept missiles with a range of 9 km as the first surface to air missile system before more advance LR-SAM was ready for induction after the missile system was successfully demonstrated multiple times from Kolkata class (Project 15A) stealth guided missile destroyers . INS Kolkata, INS Kochi and INS Chennai which are all Kolkata-class destroyers were first to get LR-SAM missile system since it was easy to incorporate them in newer ships then on older in service warships, but eventually, LR-SAM missile system will be installed on 14 more Indian warships, including aircraft carriers like INS Vikramaditya and INS Viraat and previous generation Delhi-class destroyers. Integration of Barak-1 and LR-SAM missile system along with AK-630 fully automatic naval close-in weapon system will fill major shortcomings of the INS Vikramaditya in terms of air defense and won’t need to rely on warships in its battle group formation.
