Indonesian president has decided to move the capital out of Java

Jakarta, is awesome. But the traffic there is horrible. I was once stuck in simatupang traffic for 2 hours to cross a 1 km junction.
The traffic alone may burn a lot of money and time, estimated 1 billion rupiah alone are lost in the air of jakarta each day because of traffic jam

.
Why? Its forbiden to criticize the great Anies Baswedan?

Its not matter his is a Muslim or another religion he is.. but in fact he doin nothing as a governor

You never visit jakarta don't you?

Do you think people will move to new capital and leave behind Jakarta? History shows they wont. Pakistan moved capital from karachi to Islamabad. Karachi is still the biggest city. look at burma, its new capital is still empty, apart from government workers that were forced to relocate.

Do you get my point? Money could be better spent improving infrastructure in Jakarta. With a new capital, even less money will be allocated to Jakarta.

According to barjo, money should be diverted for new capital, instead of trying to improve Jakarta situation. London has bad traffic, the British should relocate capital, problem solved! The guy who came up with shady plan is no genius.

Stupid idea for gullible people. Just some scam for developers to make money. Jakarta will receive less money but not your problem. I gave reasons why its a waste, but you choose to ignore them reasons.

People like you, are unfortunately common around the world and worse are in power. They don't like constructive criticism.

Fyi, i was born in the UK. The irony of you mocking me, considering huge numbers of Indonesians have migranted to neighbouring countries. Even more ironic, the reason why Indonesia government wants to move capital is the dilapidated infrastructure and SLUMS in the capital.

Please calm down, brothers

My friend, have you ever been to Jakarta, see and experience the city yourself?... Jakarta is at its limit, there is no more room for meaningful improvement. It is clogged with people and the population is increasing every year. Jakarta need to relieve some of its burden and Government need a new "healthy house" to live in.

Things may not work out in Islamabad but that doesn't mean the same will happen in Indonesia.

Jakarta was never meant to be an eternal capital city for Indonesia. Even our first president, Sukarno already planned the idea of a new capital city outside Java back when Jakarta was still spacious and underdeveloped but it didn't happen then because of the political and economic instability throughout his presidency.

Stupid idea for gullible people. Just some scam for developers to make money. Jakarta will receive less money but not your problem. I gave reasons why its a waste, but you choose to ignore them reasons.

Jakarta has high GDP and its infrastructure is mature enough, it doesn't need much money from Central Government anymore.

Jakarta will not be abandoned by Central Government.

“Jakarta will remain as the priority in development and will continue to be developed as a business city, financial city, trade center and service center on a regional and global scale,” the president said.

the reason why Indonesia government wants to move capital is the dilapidated infrastructure and SLUMS in the capital.

Instead of inventing baseless reason on your own you should read previous pages. I have posted articles stated the REAL/TRUE reason why we choose to move the capital from Jakarta.

Here's one :

WHY THE MOVE

After the presidential election earlier in April, Mr Widodo said that the government would push ahead with the plan to relocate the capital city outside Java, because of the need to address overpopulation on the country’s most populous island and to ensure more equitable development.

Jakarta is home to more than 10 million people, but around three times as many people live in the surrounding towns, adding to the area's severe congestion.

At the time, Mr Brodjonegoro put the annual economic loss due to traffic congestion in Jakarta at 100 trillion rupiah (S$9.65 billion).

The low-lying capital is also prone to flooding and is sinking due to over-extraction of groundwater.

Experts said that the northern part of the city has sunk 2.5m in the last 10 years and the city will go underwater by 2050.

Moving capital is good idea when the existing one is sinking and over populated. As most examples have shown, central government will first move their offices to the new capital, there won't be a sudden large increase in population because there is less incentive for non-government employees to move along unless there is commercial incentive.

@Type 59 is may be or may be not correct to say there won't be large population, but that is the wrong reason for not to move the capital. The reason to move is because the existing capital is facing severe problem, while type 59 instead cited the predicted under population of future capital as the reason. Thus type 59's argument does not stand.

Bear in mind that Indonesia has a huge population, by moving just 10% of Jakarta population to new capital would already make it a large city, far larger than most cities in UK.

A new capital need not be the largest city of the country. A population of 10 million may be easy for efficient management. The main key is that it is the centre of government administration.

As to how to quickly to attract large population to make the new capital a large city, careful planning to develop it in several phases (example several 5 years plans) on city planning is needed. A miracle city like China's Shenzhen took 30 years.

Anyway, Indonesia makes the right move to build a new capital on a clean sheet.

Yes like Putrajaya in Malaysia is right decision to move administration central over the economic central, a single city wouldnt enough to handle all the nation growth, its better to split them to make a strategic planning for the sosial and bussines in healty condition.

In history capitol city often move several times over decades and have their own remarkable achievement, its part of the time and history challage

Jakarta still retain their world class economy, education, political and cultural center even when the capital is moving out of Jakarta. There is talk to including Bekasi into Jakarta province as Southeast Jakarta, it is mean Jakarta will only growing into a much larger city than ever. Jakarta itself command economy size as large as whole Malaysia or Bangladesh, with high economy growth at 5.5 to 6.16 percentage a year.

So is their any truth to the Rumors of Fast Sinking Jakarta City?
Is it really sinking in coming 30 40 years? Any Indonesian Member having nay knowledge about it?

As someone who spend the majority of my childhood and the entirety of my teen days in Jakarta I can say this with certain that YES Jakarta is sinking. And the biggest contributing factor of it is the pumping of ground water.
For example in my old home in Jakarta we even use 500W Jet Pump for filling in our water tank, and when our jet pump was operating any nearby neighbour who doesn't own similar jet pump or less powerful pump weren't getting any water out of their well. So basically everybody just "compete" to get all the ground water out.

Indonesia pledges $40 billion to modernize Jakarta ahead of new capital: minister

Friday, 30/08/2019

JAKARTA (Reuters) - The Indonesian government is not abandoning Jakarta after announcing plans to move the country’s capital, its planning minister said, pledging to spend $40 billion to save the slowly sinking city in the next decade.

The current Indonesian capital will undergo a 571 trillion rupiah ($40.18 billion) urban regeneration in the next 10 years, more than the $33 billion expected cost to build a new capital city on Borneo island, Bambang Brodjonegoro told Reuters in an interview.

“Jakarta is the center of everything in Indonesia. What we are moving out of is the center of administration, but finance (centers), businesses and trades will stay,” Brodjonegoro said.

Jakarta is one of the world’s most densely populated cities, home to more than 10 million people and three times that number when counting those who live in surrounding towns.

Brodjonegoro said the relocation decision was taken because the government knew the population concentration in Jakarta has to be reduced.

The government expects to begin moving to the new capital city in the East Kalimantan province in 2024.

“People assume Jakarta is doing fine. Jakarta is not doing fine at all. The water condition is a cause for concern, wastewater, air pollution,” he added.

Only 60% of the city has pipe water infrastructure, forcing millions of people and businesses to dig wells to use up groundwater, hurting the environment, Brodjonegoro said.

The over extraction makes Jakarta prone to floods and sinking due to subsidence. Rising sea levels aggravated the sinking with some part of the city dropping as much as 11 inches a year, making Jakarta the fastest sinking city of its size globally.

Part of the new project submitted by the city government is to extend water pipes to cover all of Jakarta so that people don’t rely on groundwater, Brodjonegoro said.

The government will also build a new sewage system, he said.

The biggest chunk of the spending would be for mass transportation, such as lengthening the newly built track for its mass rapid transit (MRT) system, a new loopline railway, more commuter lines, bus-only lanes and flyovers, Brodjonegoro said.

Jakarta suffers from some of world’s worst traffic jams. The congestion, the current dry season, industrial pollution and the city’s reliance on coal power plants had put Jakarta among the world’s most polluted cities as well.

Heri Andreas, a geodesist who does research on subsidence for the Bandung Institute of Technology, said Jakarta may be saved if people stop sucking groundwater, even though he noted any construction could weigh on the city.

“If 100% of Jakartans stop using groundwater, we can build infrastructure massively and the ground will not subside,” he told Reuters by telephone.

However, at the current sinking rate, 95% of Jakarta will be underwater by 2050, Andreas warned.

Indonesia begins fortification of site of new capital
By New Straits Times - November 9, 2019 @ 1:37pm

NEW bases will be built by the Indonesian armed forces (TNI) as the country begins shifting its attention to East Kalimantan where the new capital will be relocated from Jakarta.

New headquarters for the TNI, the army, navy and air force will be built in the North Penajem Paser regency where the development of the capital will be centred, according to kompas.com.

TNI commander Air Chief Marshal Hadi Tjahjanto revealed this when briefing the House of Representatives Commission recently.

He also spoke on the defence system in the new capital.

"In a state of crisis or war, the capital city of a country will become a centre of gravity that will certainly be attacked by the enemy to its full strength. Hence, the development of a defence system in the capital city of a country is something of absolute importance for Indonesia," he said according to Antara News.

“The placement of TNI forces and other military bases will be in North Penajam Paser, alongside the Presidential Palace, the legislative complex and the offices of ministries, state institutions and foreign embassies,” Hadi told the lawmakers in the briefing.

Hadi said the new capital, which will be built on 180,000 hectares of land straddling East Kalimantan’s North Penajam Paser and Kutai Kertanegara regencies, will require full defence protection from potential threats from land, sea and air.

The commander said that the TNI will develop a strong defence system that could thwart missile, rocket and other attacks, security infiltration, cybersabotage and chemical, biological and nuclear threats.

“We will also create routes to mobilise the military through land, water and air as preparation for a contingency plan and VVIP evacuation routes,” Hadi said.

President Joko Widodo’s administration is currently finalising a master plan for the new capital city, with a target of starting the development of what has been described as a “smart metropolis” by the end of next year.

The initial stage of the development of the new capital is estimated to cost up to Rp466 trillion (RM135 billion).

The sum covers the construction of the new state palace, ministerial offices and houses of worship, all of which are expected to be completed by 2024.

‘Nagara Rimba Nusa’ announced as winner of new capital city design contest
The Jakarta Post / Mon, December 23, 2019 / 06:49 pm

The Public Works and Housing Ministry has announced the “Nagara Rimba Nusa” design as the winner of the design contest for the country’s new capital city in East Kalimantan

The design, created by architecture and urban design studio URBAN+, beat 755 other contestants to win a prize of Rp 2 billion (US$142,963).

“Their design will be developed into a capital planning design document according to the framework that has been expressed by President Jokowi,” the ministry’s Cipta Karya director general Danis Sumadilaga, who is also the head of the contest committee, said on Monday, as quoted by kompas.com.

The ministry also announced four other runners-up: “The Infinite City”, “A Thousand Furrows”, “The Emerald of the Equator” and “The Village of the People of the Archipelago.”

The winning design, which roughly translates to “forest archipelago”, was inspired by the Indonesian archipelago and includes such features as the Indonesia Raya (Great Indonesia) presidential palace and the Bhinneka Tunggal Ika (Unity in Diversity) plaza.

Sibarani Sofyan, the founder of URBAN+, said he had enlisted the help of many partners, including those from outside Indonesia, to create the design.

“Of course I could not make it myself. I have friends from Hong Kong, Singapore and other places and we worked on this together,” Sibarani said as quoted by tribunnews.com. “The inspiration came from many different places but we also used the elements of [state ideology] Pancasila that are related to the design of the capital.”

Despite winning the contest, the "Nagari Rimba Nusa" design would not be used as the sole basis for the new capital city, with Danis saying that the government would collaborate with the top three contestants as well as international designers. "We will sharpen the [design] process up to March or April," he said.

Public Works and Housing Minister Basuki Hadimuljono said the top three designs for the new capital had fulfilled three criteria for the city: it had to be a symbol of Indonesia’s advanced civilization, it had to be environmentally friendly and it had to be designed with future generations in mind.

“In January 2020, we will bring the top three winners to survey the new capital location so that they can get a sense of place starting from the center of the central government area,” Basuki said as quoted by Antara news agency. (kmt)

Public offices to be built in new capital by 2021
24 December 2019

Jakarta (ANTARA) - Public offices and houses for civil servants will be built in Indonesia's new capital city in the districts of Penajam Paser Utara and Kutai Kertanegara, East Kalimantan Province by early 2021, a minister has said. "Construction will begin once we map out the exact locations," Minister of Public Works and Public Housings Basuki Hadimuljono said in Jakarta, Monday, while stating that he would be launching a competition for the design of the public office by the second semester next year.

The new capital city will comprise 40,000 hectares of the main cluster and 256,000 hectares of a buffer zone, Hadimujono explained. "We are in the process of designing the main administrative region or KIPP," he added after announcing the winner of a new capital city design competition in Jakarta, Monday (December 23).

The contest, that was open only to architects and city planners, had been launched in early October this year. For three months, a panel of jury comprising high-ranking officials and experts had selected dozens of submissions.

After days of deliberations, a design named after "Nagara Rimba Nusa" received the first prize worth Rp2 billion. (INE)
