What's new

Indonesian president has decided to move the capital out of Java

The president prefer new capital to be in somewhere in the middle, somewhere closer to the East than Jakarta. So it's not going to be Sumatera. Besides, Riau is under constant threat from smog.

He has hinted the tendency of his choice :

Kalimantan is definitely fit the most criterias. It's in the middle, still relatively underdeveloped, no volcano and it is quake-free (not sit on the ring of fire). Sulawesi is also fit but only southern part of it.

.

Kalimantan is indeed under strong consideration but I believe it should be a national consensus before the picking is final, choosing the location is not a solely President consideration. The names will be brought to parliament and from what I heard it also include Sumatra. My preference itself is not to move our capital city, I believe we should wait make this decision at least until 2040.

I pretty sure people of Kalimantan don't like Javanese to come over their place.

Why think so? Javanese have been moving to Kalimantan for decades if not centuries.

A new capital city in Kalimantan isn't a new idea. It's well known since the time of Sukarno and no significant voice from Kalimantan opposing the idea.

Kalimantans are welcoming the plan, their only hope is that the new capital have better construction planning and management than Jakarta's. It could be an expansion of a pre-existing city or build entirely a new one from scratch on unpopulated land. Central Kalimantan govt has prepare 300.000 - 500.000 hectare of such land for the new capital city.

No, of course it isn't solely on president consideration, but in the end, it's safety first before consensus and I believe the result will be in line. From what I gathered online, majority of whom in favor of a new capital city are preferring Kalimantan, Government bodies have also give their recommendation.

Jakarta is too crowded and clogged. A new capital city is due. I know Sumatera is in consideration too but it's further west. I'm an eastern, if it's up to me I would choose new capital to be in the east since west has long enjoyed the privilege of being "pusat" of almost everything in this country. It is time for a change. But I know my region is disaster prone so I'm willing to let Kalimantan take the spot. It also in the middle so it is fair for me. :enjoy:

Javanese people and Sundanese people is quite liked everywhere in Indonesia , only exception is maybe in some remote spot in Aceh and Papua but in Kalimantan the Dayaks and Malays prefer to marries their children to Javanese because their hardworking culture, humbleness and adaptability of Javanese people quite good.

So is their any truth to the Rumors of Fast Sinking Jakarta City?
Is it really sinking in coming 30 40 years? Any Indonesian Member having nay knowledge about it?

No lah, Jakarta giant sea wall project had been commenced and restorative effort had been done on higher places to prevent land errosion.

You sound like a Loyal ( ANUS OmDo Onta / PRABOWO / CENDANA family ) supporter.

Am I right ?
My sincere apology to you if I am wrong.

Sumatra Island has unacceptable Earthquake threats.
Central KALIMANTAN ( near PALANGKARAYA city ) is the wisest and most logical choice.

Anies Baswedan supporter are many, including Yusuf Kalla and Ma'ruf Amin who is in Jokowi camp. Many Anies Baswedan supporter are also supporting Jokowi like many Muhammadiyah (including me) and many Nahdatul Ulama follower. I also voted for Jokowi since Jakarta Governor election up until latest Presidential election, you seems to be too naive to believe that all Anies Baswedan supporter (during Jakarta election) will all support Prabowo at Presidential election.

There are many consideration to pick a president, and since Jokowi is not showing any anti Islam sentiment and has a rational and good program, people who are even considered as pious Muslim are also voting for Jokowi. The condition is not like Anies versus Ahok who are so contrasting (in this chase you choose Ahok).

You sound like an anti Islam person by mocking Anies Baswedan. Look, any Indonesian leader who fight against Islam will (inshaAllah) fail just like Ahok and PSI. Even Jokowi who is already Muslim try to lean toward Islam by picking Ma'ruf Amin as his running mate and try to look as pious Muslim as he can (even at the end of campaign he went to Mecca to do umrah and all his activity during umrah are captured by camera lol).

Latest election is also showing that many Islamic province-province where many Islamic hard liner lives-like what Mahfud MD stated-which are almost in All Sumatra/South Kalimantan/ South Sulawesi/Gorontalo/NTB/ Banten/ West Java/etc are in majority still voting for Prabowo due to (some) Ulama and Islamic party support, despite Jokowi first term success (plus leaning toward Islam) and Prabowo absurd economic program. It shows there are still many Islamist loyalist in our republic.

Govt to Build New Capital City on 300,000-hectare Land
Translator: Dewi Elvia Muthiariny, Editor: Markus Wisnu Murti, 3 May 2019 21:59 WIB

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Agrarian and Spatial Planning Minister/National Land Agency (BPN) chief Sofyan Djalil said the country’s new capital would be established on a 300,000-hectare land plot belonging to the state so as to lower construction costs.

“Yes, as much as possible [the capital is built on state land]. If possible, all of the areas. So the construction costs and land clearance costs will be minimum,” Sofyan told a press conference at his office, Friday, May 3.

Sofyan explained the government would still need money to prepare the land, such as for cut and fill, “[while] the cost for land clearance will be almost zero.”

Sofyan, however, was non-committal when asked about the most potential location to be transformed as the new capital. “We have identified three to four regions. Those areas have met the requirements,” he added. One of the possible areas is located on Kalimantan Island.

He added the location of the new capital should also be free of disaster risks—despite the present rarity of areas that were 100 percent free of disaster potentials.

“Generally, our spatial planning is very concerned about disasters. So we are making plans for areas that are prone to disasters so there will be less in the future. We cannot shun disasters,” he added.

The planned relocation of the country’s capital again seized the public spotlight after President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo convened a limited cabinet meeting on the issue.

In the meeting, Jokowi chose to take the alternative of removing the capital outside Java Island.

Indonesia open to foreign investment in projects for new capital city
Bambang Nurbianto - The Jakarta Post, Fri, May 3, 2019 / 11:51 am

National Planning Minister Bambang Brodjonegoro said Indonesia welcomed foreign investors for the development of a long-debated new capital city, a plan revived by President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo on Monday.

“We will give priority to domestic resources, but we do not close the door to foreign investment,” Bambang, who also heads the National Development Planning Board (Bappenas), told The Jakarta Post on Thursday.

When chairing a Cabinet meeting on Monday, Jokowi decided to push an old plan to relieve Jakarta of its function as the capital and confer that status onto another city, outside of Java. No decision has been made yet on which city that may be, but Palangkaraya in Central Kalimantan has been discussed as an option.

During the meeting, Bappenas presented its initial study on the capital city relocation plan. The ministers discussed possible cities that could become the new political and government hub, amid environmental concerns and overcrowding in Jakarta.

The move is estimated to cost between US$23 billion and $33 billion.

Bambang said the financial resources to develop the new capital would come from the state budget, state-owned enterprises (SOEs) and the private sector, through public-private partnerships (PPP) and private investment.

He explained that the PPP scheme was preferred for developing the infrastructure in the new city, while SOEs and private parties were expected to invest in the residential facilities and commercial areas.

“Meanwhile, the state budget is prioritized [as the funding source] for developing basic infrastructure like clean water facilities, waste management, roads and public transportation,” Bambang said.

He noted that Bappenas had not yet concluded its study on moving the capital. (bbn)

Anies Baswedan is a good politician. But still can't be compared to Ahok in term of Administration skill. Maybe because he is a Teacher; while Ahok has more experience in leading companies and province.

I prefer Kalimantan or Sulawesi, as their position near the center of the country.

I hope as the capital moved out of Java, it can boast the development outside Java.

100% agree with you.

Anies has a good mouth, he speak very well.

I think he is more suitable as a teacher, inspirator or diplomat.

In general Ahok done a good job but many believe (according me) that his decision in Jakarta reclamation is a very big mistake.
