Twenty-four people returning from a parachuting exercise died as an aging military aircraft crashed into an airport hangar in Indonesia on Monday.

Six crew members, an instructor and 17 special forces trainees were on board the Fokker 27 turboprop when it went down in heavy rain at the Bandung airport in West Java, according to military officials.

None of the 24 on board survived, said air force spokesman Bambang Sulistyo. There were no casualties on the ground, he added.

The crash occurred as the pilot was trying to land in poor weather, but the cause of the crash is unknown, Sulistyo said.

Dr. M. Drajat told reporters that 17 bodies had arrived at a hospital morgue from the crash and officials have been informed to anticipate the arrival of more.

Witnesses reported the 32-year-old plane appeared to be shaking before diving to the ground.

"There was a thundering sound and the plane blew apart," Budi Wuraskito, director of operations at the airport, told the Associated Press.
