, Jakarta - The Indonesian government will deliver 5,000 tons of rice as humanitarian aid to drought-stricken Sri Lanka.

President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo said the food aid had personally been requested by Sri Lankan President Maithripala Sirisena.

“I have responded to the request since it was urgently needed,” Jokowi said at the warehouse of state-owned logistic agency Bulog in Jakarta on Tuesday, February 14, 2017.

Having a close relationship with Sri Lanka, Jokowi went on, Indonesia feels the need to help the country. He expects the relevant ministry to immediately send the humanitarian aid.

On the same occasion, Foreign Affairs Minister Retno Marsudi said that Indonesia and Sri Lanka have a very long history together. The two countries were the co-founder of the Non-Aligned Movement.

Retno noted that the humanitarian aid is part of Indonesia’s diplomacy, adding that it will continue. “We want to contribute to world peace and prosperity,” she said.

Earlier in late December last year, Indonesia sent humanitarian aid to the Rohingya people in Rakhine State, Myanmar.

For the Kind gesture Indonesia has shown...

I would expect India and other regional players to come together and help Sri Lanka during these difficult times.
India has to play a very major role, given being closest neighbor and having capabilities to support.

As one wise man said, never offer help unless asked for!

How much has farm output fallen or will fall ??
Severe Drought + no money to buy food == famine

No one is saying there will be no money to buy food.. They have placed contingency plans to supplement the short fall

Unlike the sub continent Sri Lanka never faced famine, Even in worse scenarios in the past.. No one there have died of starvation

Where can I donate food or money to the Tamils?

Sri Lanka has never faced a famine and all precautions have been taken. Import taxes on rice have been reduced and water bowsers carry drinking water to drought hit areas

Sri Lanka has good ties with most of the region, I'm sure more of this stuff will keep pouring in.

feeding 20 million people is not a big issue for international community

For the international community to feed 20 mil people or 200 mil people there have to be a famine, SL never have had and will not have a famine, For many reasons, As of this time due to contingency plans already in place by the authorities to supplement the short fall of any food
