Indonesia to put forward Palestine issue in UN Security Council

Jakarta (ANTARA News) - Issues related to the plights of Palestinians, who have long been struggling for an independent state, will get prominence during Indonesia`s terms as a non permanent member of UN Security Council 2019-2020.

"Palestine issue will also become Indonesia`s focus during its terms as a non-permanent member of UN Security Council," Minister of Foreign Affairs Retno Marsudi said in a video conference live from New York, here on Friday evening.

Indonesia was elected as a non-permanent member of the United Nations Security Council for 2019-2020 terms after member-states of the world body have voted in New York on Friday.

"Alhamdulillah (praise be to God), during the UN General Assembly, Indonesia was elected as a non-permanent member of UN Security Council representing the Asia-Pacific Group to replace Kazakhstan which will conclude its terms at the end of 2018." Minister Marsudi said.

Indonesia competed with the Maldives for one seat allocated to the Asia-pacific group.

As many as 190 member states of the UN voted in the UNSC election 2018 on Friday, therefore, only 126 votes, or two-thirds, are required by the candidates to be elected.

President of the 72nd Session of the UN General Assembly Miroslav Lajcak announced the result of the Friday`s voting that Indonesia gained 144 votes while Maldives got 46 votes.

Indonesia was elected as a non-permanent member of UNSC for 2019-2020 along with South Africa from African Group, Dominican Republic from Latin American and Caribbean Group, and Belgium and Germany from Western European and Others Group.

During its terms, Indonesia will focus on strengthening the ecosystem of global peace and stability, Marsudi said.

Moreover, Indonesia will encourage a habit of dialog in resolving conflict and improve capacity of UN peacekeeping force including promoting the role of women peacekeeper in UN peacekeeping missions.

Furthermore, Marsudi noted, Indonesia will promote the establishment of global comprehensive approach to combat terrorism, radicalism and extremism.

Previously, Indonesia has held the seat three times in 1973-1974, 1995-1996, and 2007-2008.

The Security Council has 15 members --five permanent (United States, United Kingdom, France, Russia, and China) and 10 non-permanent serving for two years.

The earthquake killing over thousand people is a tragedy yet in one sentence you say they don't care and in the following sentence you leave a angry response not to give Palestinians a "****" for their tragedy.

The idea that Indonesia is doing anything that helps Palestinians in any tangible way is laughable. Yet here you are acting like they are getting too much from Indonesia and that it should be given to it's own people. It's easy to not care when they "rot in the hell with all of their problems" because it's not you that's suffering. But of course, expect everyone else to care about the tragedy occurring in Indonesia because of natural disasters since it affect people and the country you care about.

Palestinian issues has become one of Muslim interest that has been supported even by a hard core Nationalist party like PDI-P. As Indonesia grows more conservative day by day, the other important Muslim interest like Muslim unity might become the next issue that will be adopted by the government. InshaALLAH. I predict Indonesia will join Islamic Military Alliance in 2024.

The formula that result that prediction is : Democracy+ Growing Islamic conservatism, + Voter interest (Muslim interest) = Government policy

Indonesia will always stand with Palestine, says Foreign Minister Retno Marsudi

JAKARTA: Hundreds of protesters staged a rally in front of the US Embassy in Jakarta on Friday, demanding that US President Donald Trump reconsider his decision to declare America’s recognition of Jerusalem as the capital of Israel.

Jakarta police spokesman Argo Yuwono told Arab News that there were roughly 500 protesters in the rally.
Agus Sudarmaji, the director of the Al-Aqsa Working Group, based in Bogor, West Java, told Arab News that his group helped to coordinate the rally to show their support for Palestine.

Youth groups affiliated with Indonesia’s largest Muslim organization, Nahdlatul Ulama (NU), also attended.
“If the US doesn’t respond to our demands to withdraw its move, we will hold bigger rallies not just in Jakarta but also in other cities,” Asep Irfan Mujahid, head of the Association of NU Students, told Arab News.

Foreign Minister Retno Marsudi told journalists on Friday that she met with the US Ambassador to Indonesia, Josep Donovan, on Thursday, on the sidelines of the Bali Democracy Forum. “I have conveyed our official position as President Widodo instructed regarding US recognition of Jerusalem as the capital of Israel,” Marsudi said.

In her opening speech at the forum, Marsudi declared, “Indonesia will always stand with Palestine.”
“I stand here, wearing the Palestinian scarf to show the strong commitment of Indonesia, of the people of Indonesia, to always stand with the Palestinian people for their rights,” Marsudi told delegates from 99 countries.

President Joko Widodo said in a statement that Indonesia strongly condemned the US’ unilateral move to recognize Jerusalem as the capital of Israel and demanded it reconsider its decision. He also called on members of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) to unite in sending a strong message to the US.

Reza Widyarsa, a lecturer at the University of Indonesia’s Middle East and Islamic Studies Department, told Arab News that Indonesia could play a more active role as a mediator, in cooperation with a country that has diplomatic ties with, and a less confrontational stance toward, Israel.

NU Secretary-General Helmy Faishal Zaini said the NU urged the government to play a more proactive role in the crisis and “strongly condemns the unilateral recognition.”
“We also urge the OIC to mobilize its members to support Palestine’s independence,” Zaini added.
Yenny Wahid, director of the Wahid Foundation and daughter of the late President Abdurrahman Wahid, said the decision could trigger global instability, especially in Muslim-majority countries.

The head of the Indonesian Ulema Council Advisory Board and chairman of the Indonesia-Palestine Friendship Initiative, Din Syamsuddin, said in a statement that the American move “clearly puts a dead end on the long-standing peace process.”
“It could also spur radicalism among Muslims who react to the global injustice that the US has created,” Syamsuddin added.

Indonesia’s ruling party, the Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDIP), said it “deeply regrets” the decision and has instructed its cadres who are members of the House of Representatives’ Commission I, which oversees foreign policy, to take active and progressive measures to support Palestinian independence.
“Efforts to support Palestine’s independence should be the main guideline for all Indonesia’s diplomacy,” the party’s secretary general Hasto Kristiyanto said.

Thank you Indonesia, and my condolences and behalf of the victims of the recent earthquake and tsunami. May Allah grant them acceptance.

We do appreciate bringing up these matters at the UN, it achieves more than people think. Keeping the cause on the table while current US administration and unfortunately some Arab regimes think it's a lost cause and that it should not be discussed anymore. Israel is aggressively taking necessary steps to enable for annexation of West Bank and with cooperation from US administration wants two state solution off the table. If Indonesia and other countries like Turkey, some Arab nations, Iran, European nations and so on keep emphasizing the need for two state solution. Then it keeps this cause alive, and requires discussion even for one state solution or other solutions. Anything other than what Israeli's suggest such as just moving out of their land.

Indonesia is a developing nation with educated people that is going to undoubtedly be influential in it's region and abroad in future. And I believe they should take up some roles in their own ways, and these types of roles are effective and professional to take diplomatic route.

Head of Hamas Political Bureau Ismail Haniya offered condolences to Indonesia’s President Joko Widodo after the severe earthquake and tsunami that had hit the Indonesian Island of Sulawesi.

In a letter of condolence, Haniya said, “We, in Hamas, received the news of the massive earthquake and tsunami that had hit Sulawes and left hundreds of victims and severe damage to the buildings and public properties with great pain and sorrow.”

The Hamas top-leader expressed his sincere commiserations to the victims’ families and the Indonesian people wishing a speedy recovery for the wounded.

Haniya also voiced Hamas’ complete solidarity with Indonesia and its people, as well as with the residents of the Indonesian island of Sulawesi.

Haniya hoped that Indonesia could overcome the consequences of such a natural disaster wishing it a future of stability, security, and prosperity.

Israeli prime minister’s El Al flight from Singapore to Sydney took more than 11 hours rather than the usual eight and a half

The Israeli prime minister was forced to take a two-and-a-half-hour detour en route to Australia, apparently to avoid Indonesian airspace.

Benjamin Netanyahu arrived in Sydney at about 6.30am AEDT on Wednesday for a four-day visit, the first time an Israeli prime minister has visited Australia.


The average direct flight from Singapore to Sydney takes about eight and a half hours; according to the flight tracking site FlightAware, Netanyahu’s total flight time was just over 11 hours as his flight path dodged Indonesia’s airspace.

A member of Netanyahu’s delegation confirmed the route to the Guardian.

The flight was operated by El Al, the flag carrier of Israel that is disallowed from venturing into the airspace of many Muslim nations, including Pakistan.

Indonesia is home to the largest population of Muslim people in the world – the vast majority of the total population of about 240 million – and it is staunchly supportive of the Palestinian cause.

It has no formal diplomatic ties with Israel, but does sanction some travel and trade. Its visa-free policy was extended to Israel and 83 other countries in December 2015 in a bid to increase tourism.

In March last year Netanyahu called for diplomatic relations to be formally established with Indonesia because of the “many opportunities for bilateral cooperation”, especially in technology.

According to the Times of Israel report, he said the reasons for the two countries not to have a relationship were “no longer relevant” and that they were allied against terrorism.

He told the delegation of Indonesian journalists, visiting as guests of the Israeli foreign ministry: “I have quite a few Facebook friends who are Indonesian.”

But the Indonesian government said in response that ties with Israel would only be normalised if Palestine gained independence.

Cabinet secretary Pramono Anung said: “The most important thing is the spirit to realise Palestinian independence”.

Our long tradition of supporting Palestinian has been conducted since our getting independence and maybe you should know that during New Order (Soeharto regime) our foreign minister is an Arab Indonesian. I just found out that Indonesia allows Palestinian imports from the West Bank without levying a tax on them. As well as organizing fundraisers to help fund the UNRWA after US cut all its aid to it. I did not know that and that is very kind of your country and its people. UNRWA is actually very crucial when it comes to providing subsidized goods to Palestinians in need.

Palestine and Egypt were the first two nations that recognize Indonesia's independence. The Palestinians gave us moral support at the time we needed it. While Indonesia has enjoyed freedom for more than 70 years, Palestine is still live under occupation till this day. Indonesia will never forget and abandon Palestine. We still "owe a debt" to Palestine.

However, no matter how many support coming from the outside, the Palestinian themselves - whole of them - must unite first, otherwise it would be like throw a bucket of salt into ocean.

Learn from us. We were divided for centuries. Only after we united and forget our differences that we're able to succeed. Forget Fatah, forget Hamas, or whatever, just unite for Palestine sake. Only then there's hope.
