Jakarta (ANTARA) - The governments of Indonesia and Bangladesh are assessing their cooperation agreement to construct a power plant in Bangladesh, Indonesian State Enterprises Minister Erick Thohir stated.

"We are still reviewing the cooperation between Indonesia and Bangladesh to build a power plant there," he noted in Jakarta on Friday.

State oil and gas company Pertamina and state electricity company PT Perusahaan Listrik Negara (PLN) will build the power plant.

Thohir also spoke of having discussed the cooperation with Bangladeshi Minister of Railways Md Nurul Islam Sujon.

The cooperation is not only limited to business-to-business but also training for Bangladesh individuals. Through the activity, the State Enterprises Ministry can assist Indonesia's partners.

"We know that Bangladesh is a friendly country with which we will always intensify our cooperation," he stated.

Thohir had earlier expressed readiness to synergize with Indonesian ambassadors stationed in several countries under the efforts to find new investors and open markets for Indonesian exports.

He pointed out that President Joko Widodo had issued directives to Indonesian ambassadors. The president had called on the ambassadors to focus 70-80 percent of their activities on the economic sector. Thus, export and investment will become their key performance indicators (KPIs).

@Indos

More BD-Indonesia economic cooperation.

Good development. I hope cooperation will be further deepen. Indonesia is not like Saudi or UAE with huge investment plan outside their country, but if we have some money to be invested it should be on countries like Bangladesh or Pakistan.

Our trade agreement is also being worked so we can have more access on each other country market. At the moment Chinese and Vietnamese garment product are exploiting Indonesian garment market due to ASEAN-China FTA. I think Bangladesh garment can compete well if our trade agreement negotiation is completed. Indonesia on the other hand also producing garment raw material like rayon that is needed by Bangladeshi garment industry.

I would like to see Indonesia as one of our biggest partner be it economy, trade, defence or geo-political. More power to Indonesia-Bangladesh co-operation.

I believe that both countries realise that due to their proximity, large population and huge economic sizes over the medium-long term they can both benefit immensely from closer ties in all fields.

Certainly we can look at and provide preference to each other's economies as Muslim countries.

Bangladesh can provide preference to Indonesian apparel textiles and synthetic fibre items (such as Rayon) over those coming from China and India. In fact we can get Indonesian companies to invest locally to produce Rayon as we have huge raw material reserves in our hill tracts bamboo forests to produce Rayon, which we have been producing for a while now.

Same goes for Newsprint, paper production raw materials (pulp) which are also produced locally. We can look at Indonesian experience in this area.

Indonesian clinker and coal for cement and power production respectively are already being imported in some quantity by local conglomerates.

Yup and both of our government have already started to do that. We just need to wait until preferential trade agreement between two countries are signed. Our trade value is still quite low at the moment. The opportunity to both countries are quite big particularly if we see projection from CEBR that Indonesia and Bangladesh economy will reach 2 trillion dollar and 700 billion dollar respectively in 2030.

Will Indonesia have to leave Asean in the future in order to develop closer economic relations with BD, Pakistan, Iran and Turkey?

I do not see how this can be avoided to be honest.

Bangladesh, Iran, Pakistan and Turkey economy combined still fall short of ASEAN economy even without Indonesia joined, so surely Indonesia will not leave ASEAN with their REAL ECONOMY COOPERATION in many sector including joint investment and industrial research .

Yes for now.

BD is the big jumper with expected growth of 7.3% till 2034 by CEBR.

Turkey should become the first fully developed Muslim country by 2030.

Iran has lots of tech and huge oil + gas resources.

Pakistan has lots of agricultural and natural resources.

Combine this with Indonesia, we are looking at 800 million population economic region with massive technological and natural resources.

PS - Are you not forgetting that Indonesia and Malaysia are Muslim countries and the time for Muslims is coming?

After the 6 core countries, eventually the other Muslim countries can be brought in one by one.

Asean is nothing compared to the combined Muslims. I think it will soon be redundant for Indonesia and Malaysia.

PSS - What joint tech r&d? Only Indonesia really has substantial tech in Asean. Rest are pretty backward apart from Singapore but that is tiny and specialises in a few niche sectors.

Leaving ASEAN in my opinion will not be pursuit as founding ASEAN is Indonesia effort to influence the region and make it as a peacefull region. Despite so leaving ASEAN-China Free Trade Agreement can be done in the future if there is no real positive effect on Indonesian economy. So far the effect is negative as Indonesia market is floaded with Chinese goods and Indonesian stainless stell product is curbed in China with high tax.
