An Indo-Russian project to develop a fifth generation fighter aircraft (FGFA) is in force as per agreed terms and conditions, Russia’s Rosoboronexport has asserted.

“In connection with media reports on the project of the Russian-Indian 5th generation aircraft, the Russian-Indian agreement is in force and there are obligations, under which the joint project on creating the 5th generation aircraft will be executed by the parties in accordance with the agreed terms and stages,” a Rosoboronexport statement said today.

According to a report in the US-based ‘Defense News,’ senior IAF officers are concerned that the FGFA will not meet requirements including stealth. Major structural changes would be required that cannot be met in the existing Russian prototypes. Consequently, “the IAF is not keen to continue with the program,” an unnamed senior IAF official was quoted as saying.

However, HAL Chairman and Managing Director T Suvarna Raju said the co-development project with Russia will be an opportunity as no country has ever offered such critical technology to India.

"It is an opportunity for the industry as well as for the country. This is an opportunity for us to go in for this kind of (high) technology which has not been offered to us by any other country (except Russia)," he was quoted as saying by PTI on Monday.

Though based on the Sukhoi Su-57 fifth-gen stealth fighter (previously PAK-FA), the FGFA will include a total of 43 improvements over its Russian cousin, including stealth, super-cruise, advanced sensors, networking and combat avionics.

The Indians absolutely love the SU30MKI

This is the most successful license built project in india ever with HAL/DRDO having assembled nearly 200 planes.

India has ordered SU30MKI 4 different batches since 2001

50 in 2001
140 in 2004
40 in 2009
42 more in 2013

You have no idea what you talking about

SU30MKI has been on 7 difffrent excercises overseas . Twice to USA twice To UK and France

Su30mki will remain the most numerous combat plane in IAF until 2040 and will be complemented by Rafale & Tejas AND eventually a fifth generstion fighter by 2030

You are correct about PAK FA

Before India agrees to SU57 or FGFA They want concrete proof and state of art TECHNOLOGY on a new TVC engine and new sensors and changes to airframe to gurantee stealth before committing billion $$$ of tax payers money .

I think PAK FA is in the balance AS the USA is pressing india to BUY USA warplanes either F16/70 or Super hornets .

F35 lightening OR joint manfacture of AMCA with USA is also being discussed

Russia may end having to go alone on FGFA

That may be the reason why IAF is flying over 200 birds with additional 70+ order being assembled and in progress as we speak. :sarcastic::sarcastic::sarcastic:

NEW DELHI — Despite signing a long-term agreement with Russia for the supply of spare parts and the rendering of technical assistance for five years for India's Sukhoi Su-30MKI aircraft, the fleet continues to face maintenance problems and a lack of spare parts.

In the past decade, the Indian Air Force has bought hundreds of Su-30MKI fighter jets from Russia. Some of Moscow’s most advanced export fighters, the warplanes should have helped New Delhi strengthen its military.

But it turns out, the twin-engine jets have failure-prone motors. Their AL-31FP engines break down with alarming frequency.

Murphy's Law: The Hidden Flaw Of The Su-30
:

Some Western analysts believe that Indian problems with their Su-30 fighters are due to the fact that India is using its Su-30s like Western aircraft. This can be seen from the fact that India is one of the top three users of the Su-27/30 fighters but the only one having lots of reliability problems. The other two major users (China and Russia) have much lower accident and higher reliability rates. Some of this can be attributed to low quality Su-30 components manufactured in India as well as an equally lackadaisical attitudes towards quality control when it comes to aircraft maintenance. While this this sort of accusation offends many Indians there is not getting away from the fact that there are similar problems throughout the military and industry, especially state owned firms

Still by gods grace we don't have to buy used F-16's oops, used SU-30's and scavenge on them to keep our birds operational. ;)
