Indigenous ‘Ghatak’ assault rifle cleared by Paramilitary forces

QUOTE:

For over a decade now, the Ordnance Factory Board has been attempting to develop an indigenous assault rifle on the lines of the AK-47. Initially, there was some embarrassment after an ordnance factory displayed an indigenous replica of the AK-47 at a defence expo in Delhi. This didn't go unnoticed and Mikhail Kalashnikov, the inventor of the world's most sold and used assault rifle that goes by his name, threatened to file a copyright violation suit against the Indian ordnance factory.

"Since then, our designers have been attempting to develop an assault rifle, using the AK-47 as a model but without replicating any of its mechanism. Three ordnance factories tried to develop their own variants. These were Rifle Factory of Ishapore, the Small Arms Factory of Kanpur and the Ordnance Factory of Tiruchirapalli.

Dear Indian members, call spade a spade, this is a AK clone and an unfortunate one, would have been impressed if it was engineered with genuine changes in mechanism like the Vz58. but this has the same long stroke, rotating bolt, to escape IP issues, dim's might have been changes, But still a horrid effort nonetheless

The Chinese can produce Type - 56 and the whole World is okay with it, but its us who feel the shame, when we do a similar thing ?
Yes they don't take offence to it being called as an unlicensed clone, or claim it as indigenous,.
As far as shame part of my comment, is about calling it indigenous and not the rifle, In fact I have a owned a modded Romanian AKM for about 5 years now I am a big AK fan.

What is the range of this?
1 KM or more?
300 Yards effective open sight, 700 yards max range.

It,s a clown of AK-47 with a inferiority complex.

Sir! i respect your rationality .You are a valuable asset of this forum.

don't you know that, pakistan army use type 56 which is a cinese copy of Ak 47, if you don't feel any shame in using that one, then what is your problem in india using a modified AK??

I went through the OP, it does not say anything about 'indigenous'. Also, at this point, I don't know much about its specs. May be it has been tweaked to some extent for our own requirements.
Anyways, we are satisfied as long as it gets the job done.

My problem with OFB is a it absolutely lacks innovation, a decade old company like keltec comes up with brilliant designs to production cycle within a year and less, and OFB has been in the business even longer than the nation itself but still produces exceptionally poor products like ashani, exceptionally poor .22 LR ammo, bad 5.5.6 ammo, adapted versions of a lee enfield bolt for it's 30-06 sporter, and ridiculous options like 5.56x 30 minsas.

OFB's track record and products leave a lot to be desired.

In retrospect, maybe an AK clone is a good idea as at-least we know it's a proven design.

It's quite shameful to call this indigenous

Brother every rifle in this world is copy of AK 47, be it X-95 Tavor, M- Series of US, Insas, Ak 56, Galil series every damn rifle.

All of them use one historical invention of AK series, Rotating Bolt mechanism, which comprises 80% technology in any assault rifle, be it extraction mechanism, reloading, type of fire mechanism every thing, is same in all Rotating Bolt action rifle.

Only other important aspect is mettalurgy of weapon, which matters in jamming of weapon. Rest all part is just show.

because the chinese built the type 56 in 1956, with little industrial capacity and hasn't been in mainstream use for nearly 40 years. In 2015, India can only come up with a bad copy of the original AK.

if this is indigenization than .. god save us !

I really do not understand what to make of this.

Two lines of incomplete and incoherent phrases with holes more than a sieve.

1. The Type-56 is one of the most massively produced and exported assault rifle in the history of mankind, with at least 8 major variants, used in around 30 countries(Yes still in use in many places in large numbers). Estimates for total number produced go as high as 18 million. That tells us in lengths and volumes about industrial capacity.

2. What exactly makes you think because just because the Chinese did it, India is doing the same ? What is the correlation?

3. How did you deduce its a bad copy ? You have some facts and figures ?

We make OFB as merely a production agency not a company.
Its time to dissolute OFB & merge their Vehicle & Tank division in BEML, Gun division to seperate company, Ammunition division in BDL etc.
Shut down some useless factory of OFB, Jabalpur Vehicle Factory who just assemble from CKD kits supplied by TATA & Ashok Leyland which makes them more expensive.

Isnt this already undergoing user evaluation?

And definitely it going to replace INSAS. Thats the most important thing.

One more thing this was developed by ARDE not OFB.. On the other note ARDE accepted that they influenced with Ak-47, AR-15 and FN FNC.

Still you want to prosecute ARDE and OFB?

I think this is the actual pic of Ghatak ( also posted by Kaku). The one posted along with article seems to be previous attempt of AK clone. but the new one seems to be good.
