India's UAV Rustom-1 attains flying altitude of 11,500 feet

Bangalore, May 8 (PTI) Capable of undertaking various military missions and intelligence gathering tasks, the indigenously developed Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) Rustom-1 today demonstrated its ability to fly at an altitude of 11,500 feet with a heavier take-off weight.

"Indigenously designed and developed Rustom-1 made a successful flight today morning at Kolar with attainment of about 11,500 feet above ground level and speed of above 140 kmph during 2 hours and 10 minutes of cruise,"
DRDO officials said here.

It was the 14 successful test flight of the UAV. Developed by DRDO's Bangalore-based lab Aeronautical Development Establishment (ADE), Rustom had its maiden flight in November 2009. PS Krishnan, Director ADE, after witnessing the flight, said the mission was successful and all the parameters were achieved by the UAV, which weighed around 690 kgs. Its total performance was satisfactory, he said. Underlining the highlights of the flight, he said the UAV used a 'lean mixture control system' in the engine for flying at high altitudes and its take-off weight was also the heaviest so far. During the flight, Rustom also achieved the maximum altitude of 3.5 kms and flew upto its extended range of about 50 kms, which was tried out for the first time.

"The waypoint track was perfect and so were take-off, landing and other parameters of the aircraft," the officials said. Rustom-1 has the potential to conduct military missions like reconnaissance and surveillance, target acquisition, target designation, communications, battle damage assessment and gathering signal intelligence. Once fully developed, it will be able to attain the maximum altitude of 22,000 feet with an endurance of 12-15 hours and operate within a range of 250 kms, the officials said.

Not possible with Rustom-1. It is not a MALE. This report seems to be mixed on the basis of wrong assumptions. The Rustom-H is a MALE which is capable of doing such a feat but Rustom-1 is a light drone meant to patrol on a mission similar to IAI Panther drone.

Reporters need to really do a little bit research before writing absolute nonsense.

GREAT news.Keep it up DRDO.Now it's time to test fly the Rustom H MALE UAV with a couple of HELINA ATGMs.That thing will become a nightmare for enemy panzer formations.By the way,I think DRDO should start to develop a miniaturised Kaveri turbofan to power the upcoming Rustom H instead of sticking to prop engines. The jet is the way to go.Hope DRDO thinks this way.

I was thinking that Rustom-1 is the scaled down version and a technology test bed for Rustom-H and the AURA program.

So is Rustom -H and Rustom-1 completely different projects?

congrats to DRDO.

they need to keep all the 3 services on bord before design & development of such a vital project. as they are the final users DRDO need to adress concerns raised by the 3 services in the inetial phase only to ensure smooth transformation of a test platform to a letahl platform used by the services.

Congrats to DRDO.

Indian and pakistani soldiers are fighting at an altitude more than this. Damn !!

Got that right.
AURA is supposed to have stealth feature and different design ( flying wing ) than Rustom.
Rustom 1 and 2/H/male are similar designs. But second is UCAV

Amazing, everywhere you look there is more good news coming from India, congrats India, and congrats to her citizens as well, you guys have done all this through peaceful means, no wonder the world is not worried about India's rise.

The world needs a strong, powerful India, well done to all of you.

Don't worry India will get there, Indian people know too well that the country has a long way to go and they are all working towards that goal, I admire the fact that Indians are not afraid to admit that the country has problems but I also admire the fact that the people of India are trying their hardest to improve the country.
