India's next big military acquisition could be an Armed Jet Powered Avenger Drone

India's air force has asked Washington about acquiring around 100 armed Predator C Avenger aircraft, which the United States has used to carry out strikes against Islamist militants in Pakistan's northwest and neighbouring Afghanistan.

The U.S. has successfully completed the first flight of a turbojet-powered unmanned aerial vehicle by General Atomics Aeronautical Systems Inc.

The big question now is whether India be offered the Avenger UAV with a new Jet powered Engine?

The aircraft is called the Avenger Extended Range, a variant of the company's jet-powered Predator C Avenger, which has accumulated over 13,000 flight hours to date.

GA-ASI said the flight occurred late last month at its Gray Butte Flight Operations Facility in Palmdale, Calif.

"The first flight of Avenger ER is a significant achievement in the evolution of Predator C's proven performance and multi-mission capability," said Linden Blue, GA-ASI's chief executive officer. "The increased endurance and high payload capacity will deliver tremendous capability to our customers, who need persistent situational awareness and strike mission affordability."

The aircraft has a wingspan of 76 feet and carries 2,200 pounds of additional fuel. Its flight endurance is 20 hours, five more than the legacy Avenger. The remotely piloted aircraft also features a wide array of sensors and weapons payloads to perform ISR and ground support missions.

India is in talks with the United States to purchase 40 Predator surveillance drones, officials said, a possible first step towards acquiring the Avenger UAV, a development likely to annoy Pakistan to the core.

Weapons like Predator are offensive weapons and are not meant for wars or as some deterrent, they are meant for peace time usage. If we are looking to acquire the same does that mean that we have a political decision that we will use it on terrorists and naxals and even across LOC as a response to some terrorist attack in the future

I was never in support of buying any specific weapons from US (what India already bought) except P-8I and now this. P-8I is greatest submarine hunter ever.

Avenger is the stealthiest and most advanced killer drone till now.

I have doubt if US will sell it!!

Here Avengers are fighting against S-400 but if India buys, It will fly side by side with PAK FA and S-400. lol

Yeah even I have heard about these types of drones that fly and can also be used like missiles if required

Whatever be the opinion of the members I am not the opinion that we should pursue armed drones from US. The Armed Drones from US serve a purpose. Will it serve ours? Even releasing a small missile from a Drone to destroy an terrorist base in P-O-K is an act of war. Are our politicos ready to face war, and face domestic and global criticism for starting a war?
We should let our own domestic Drone industrial complex mature and give us an 'good' platform instead of the 'best'. Armed Drones are of no use with respect to China as we will never go to war with them. So I hope they use this money to fullfil basic needs of our soldiers, Futuristic Infantry Soldier programme and go for carbines and ammunitions. We should look for long endurance surveillance drones though.

What purpose will it solve. Which gap will this plug?
I read somewhere. We are getting stuff that we would like to have instead of getting stuff that we must have.

Unlikely...unless they have made a secret D model that makes the C look like a toy. The US sells previous versions when we have something much better.
