BGP led central Govt on Wednesday announced the appointment of Shri Samant Goel, an IPS officer, as next R&AW Chief. Goel is to take charge as the Chief of India’s external intelligence agency by the end of this month. His appointment comes as no surprise to the Intelligence community and R&AW officials as they consider Goel to have ‘impeccable integrity’. Goel’s name surfaced in the media very recently as he was named the ‘Brain’ behind failed ‘Balakot strike’ in Pakistan on February 27th this year.
However this is not the first time Samant Goel’s name has done rounds on the media, he has been in the limelight last year when he was named by CBI officer AK Bassi, investigating corruption charges against another CBI Official, in his Petition to Supreme Court of India.
CBI’s senior officer AK Bassi filed a case against his own boss Special Director Rakesh Asthana when a complaint was lodged by a Hyderabad-based businessman ‘Sathis Sana’ to the bureau. Bassi in his plea to the Supreme Court said that Asthana took 5-crore in bribe from Sathis & Moin Qureshi (meat exporter),facing probe in a 2017 case, in return for a ‘Clean Chit’ from the probing agency.
Bassi in his statement to the Supreme Court named RAW Officer ‘Samant Goel’ along with two middlemen Manoj Prasad & Somesh Prasad. He also submitted the details of WhatsApp messages and Call records between Goel & the two middlemen regarding the transfer of bribe money.Goel at the time was Special Secretary, RAW.
It is to be noted here that Samant Goel and Rakesh Asthana are from same IPS batch 1984 and have been good friends for a long time. It was revealed that Goel asked Somesh to not come to India at any cost. The excerpt from Somesh cellphone messages reads:
“Asthana to Apna Admi Hai (Asthana is our man). Manoj has met Asthana 3 to 4 times. Samant bhai met Asthana after registration of the case. Samant bhai is very close to Asthana.”
This does not stop here, further investigation into the case revealed that Manoj Prasad & Somesh Prasad are brothers and their father was R&AW’s former director chief Dineshwar Prasad. Role of Former & Serving RAW Officials & the CBI top brass in this case of extortion racketeering is very clear and leaves no doubt in everyone’s mind that there is an institutionalized corruption at the highest echelons of Indian bureaucracy.
Bassi, the Investigating Officer, demanded that Goel be removed from his position at RAW till investigation is completed however the extortion network at the two federal agencies was so strong that they had Bassi transffered to port blair.
The corruption case involving top brass of CBI & RAW’s new Chief has left Central Govt red faced as both of the departments directly report to Prime Minister Narender Modi.
