CENSORSHIP IN DEMOCRATIC INDIA

(Reuters) - India has urged social network companies including Facebook, Twitter and Google to remove offensive material, unleashing a storm of criticism from Internet users complaining of censorship in the world's largest democracy.

Telecoms and Information Technology Minister Kapil Sibal met executives from Facebook, Google, Yahoo and Microsoft Monday to ask them to screen content, but no agreement with the companies was reached, he said.

Socially conservative India already censors some films and books considered obscene or likely to stoke religious conflict.

The country of 1.2 billion people created new rules earlier this year obliging Internet companies to remove a range of objectionable content when requested to do so, a move criticized at the time by rights groups and social media companies.

The government is very sensitive to criticism of Gandhi, whose family has dominated Indian politics since before independence from the British and has lost two prominent figures to assassination.

1st the anti-democratic invasion and occupation of the country of Kashmir and now the anti-freedom-of-speech censorship on the internet.

India is EXACTLY like North Korea (Democratic People's Republic of Korea), democratic only in name. In fact, in terms of living standards and life expectancy, North Korea fares much better than India.

North Korea
Life expectancy 67.3 years
GDP $1,900
IQ 106

India
Life expectancy 64.7 years
GDP $1,527
IQ 79

India is the worlds biggest fake democracy, land of illusion freedom, and home of the miserable and poor.

Although this has been posted here before . The decision was made by the govt that it could not treat it's citizens like they were Chinese and the one guy who inquired about it was ridiculed by the country. Subsequently the term " don't do a Chinese" was added into the Indian lexicon

Done what for BB? All that was done for BB was to force the service providers to allow the intelligence agencies to monitor terrorist traffic. Letting terrorists and criminals get a totally secure and highly encrypted media for communication is not a bright idea. No one allows that, be it US or UK or Germany.

Huan, actually it was not the govt, even colleagues of Mr Sibal in the govt were not in agreement with him. Anyway when he saw the very widespread disagreement and anger at the idea of censureship of fb and other sites, he beat a hasty retreat. The real motivation for this half assed attempt does not matter, the govt now knows the mood of the nation as regards internet censureship and wont try it again.
