India Aug electricity output up 9.8% yr/yr

India produced 9.8 percent
more electricity in August than a year earlier as better fuel
availability offset a decline in hydro power generation caused
by a weak monsoon, official data showed on Monday.

India produced nearly 65.6 billion kilowatt-hours in
August, up from 59.7 billion kilowatt-hours a year earlier.

Despite the increase, India's peak power deficit in the
month was 14.2 percent and the energy deficit was 10.7 percent.

Gas supplies to power plants increased after Reliance
Industries (RELI.BO) started gas production from its east coast
D6 block in April.

Thermal electricity, which contributes about two-thirds of
the country's power generation and include coal, gas and liquid
fuel-fired plants, grew nearly 16 percent in August from a year
earlier.

Hydro power generation declined nearly 11 percent in August
from a year earlier due to patchy and low monsoon rains. Hydro
power plants accounts for 24.3 percent of the country's
installed capacity of 152.15 Gigawatts.

As seen above, India's nuclear energy output increased 33% in just one year! And with our recent uranium-supply pact with Mongolia, India is bound to increase its nuclear energy output even more.

According to Bloomberg, India has secured uranium supply contracts worth at least US$14 billion from other countries and aims to produce 60,000 megawatts of nuclear energy by 2030.
