"The objective of today's mission was for maximum range and high manoeuvring target. The missile guided by armoured seeker system hit the last minute manoeuvring target," the Defence release said. :fans: DRDO

Defence Research and Development Organisation created history by conducting three consecutive successful trials of the missile for Indian Air Force, a DRDO official said.

The land-based Barak 8 Air and Missile Defense (AMD) system includes several components:

  • RAFAEL supplies the Barak-8 interceptor missile, which remains vertically launched.
  • The battle management, command, control, communication and intelligence center (BMC4I) is produced by the MBT Division of IAI’s Missiles, Systems, and Space Group; it offers both stand alone operation for a single fire unit, and joint task force coordination (JTC).
  • IAI ELTA Systems Ltd. supplies the Land-Based Multi-Function Surveillance, Track & Guidance Radar (LB-MF-STAR), a rotating S-band digital Active Electronic Steering Array (AESA) Radar System that can deliver an accurate, high quality arena situation picture, and extract low radar cross section targets like stealthy cruise missiles, even in the toughest environmental conditions. The naval MF-STAR is expected to be part of Israel’s next-generation missile frigates.

The truth is more than what meets the eye...

Barak 8 in its normal version has two ranges

1. For Naval Version -
  • 38 Nm Range or 70 Km
  • ceiling of 52493 ft or 16000m
  • Terminal speed of Mach 4.5
  • 60 kg laser fused pre fragmented HE warhead

2. The land Version
  • Range is 65 nm or 120 km
  • Rest is same

  • The extended version or ER in Naval version reaches 100-120 Km range.
  • This is 50% improvement over base version
  • The land version is not MRSAM at all.. as its clear that its range is 120 km as written above.
  • Its pretty clear the ER for land version will reach almost 200 kms.

This implies India should look at S400 and S500 both for Long ranged versions only in excess of 250km, 400km and 500 km SAMs and HTK missiles

The S-400 is already in the pipeline. I'm not sure about the S-500 which will begin a series of “pre-tests” before the end of 2016 and will be operationalized only in 2017. So it would be a long way down the line as the Russians would first need to equip its own air defence regiments before exporting them to India. And that would probably be not before 2020-22.
