The Surya-1 is an intercontinental-range, surface-based, solid and liquid propellant ballistic missile under development. It is based upon a space launch vehicle being developed by India’s space program
to improve the nation’s aerospace industry. This project would result in India’s first intercontinental-range ballistic missile.

The Surya-1 and -2 will be classified as a strategic weapon. It will likely be used to extend the Indian nuclear deterrent force to targets deeper within China. India can only hit a limited number of targets within China, even upon the completion of the Agni-3 missile. The development of a true ICBM would make almost any strategic target within China vulnerable and decrease India’s relative weakness. This would develop a credible deterrent for India against any Chinese aggression.

The Surya-1 will have an expected range of some 8,000 km (4971 miles). It reportedly has a length of 40 m and a launch weight of 80,000 kg. As the missile has yet to be developed, the payload and warhead are as yet unknown. It is believed to be a three-stage design, with the first two stages using solid propellant and the third-stage using liquid.

The Surya-2 is a longer-ranged variant of the Surya-1. It has a reported range of 12,000 km (7456 miles). This is likely accomplished by decreasing the payload

You forgot to report Surya-3 and Surya4 with 16,000KM and 20,000KM range and what about Suriya-5 that could travel as long as it may want?

Is it a Propaganda V Propaganda war by the Indian authorities for the Indian Public???

.
Agni 5 has a range of 5000 km.... Surya 1 and Surya 2 have been Underwork, Nothing much have been let out about them

. . .
Why does India need 12,000 range missiles...all they need is enough range to cover all parts of China. How much range is needed for that 6000 km?

It should not be a big deal anyway to make ICBM based on the Indian GSLV space launch vehicles.Same principles. But why waste money there?

Quality Missiles ( with stealth technology) are more necessary. India can reach pakistan with it's just Agni 1 and next defensive purpose would be to develop 6-7 K Range Missiles.

@hack - India does need 12K, although not at current time but surely in future. Who knows future.

Read the link you gave..... INS arihant was a dead project too for many. and what happened? Surya is not a dead project, If India can make a rocket which goes to space. It can Make an ICBM too.. Wait and watch if its a dead one or not... congratz

India can develop but I am not sure whether they are developing or not. If they can develop rockets like PSLV or GSLV surely they can develop Surya too.

So why not develop Agni's and leave it at that...correct me if I am wrong but does not Agni 5 give range upto Beijing? What else is needed?

India should spent according to her defense needs not go after wild goose fantasies..just because you can make something does not mean you should make something. Why waste money?

if at all we develop ICBMs...we'd surely not want to catch the global glare...for it's bad PR...for a supposed peaceful country.
the Europeans would panic...the yanks would panic.

Actually I don't think even if India has ICBM capabilities it will reveal it. It doesn't make sense to do that since it would raise eyebrows in west as well as Russia.

When we already have them as allies why make them uncomfortable when we have no current issues with them. If Pakistan leadership wants to test it let them do. Not declaring a capability doesn't mean you don't have it.

Not a single Pakistan general or Prime Minister has come out and said that Pakistan has ICBM capability and same goes true for India. So till the time someone comes up and says something officially its all propaganda and pointless comparison.
