India’s milk production continues to grow, to the point where it now tops the milk output of all the European Union countries combined.

Milk production in India was up by a little more than 4% over the past 12 months, according to a recent survey by the country’s finance ministry. India has actually been the world’s top milk-producing country since 1997, but this is the first time that it has beat out the entire EU. On a country basis, the US produces the second-most milk, and China comes in third. As Quartz’s Lily Kuo reported last week, China is also the world’s largest importer of dairy, though its per-capita milk consumption is lower than average.

India has 75 million dairy farms, more than anywhere else in the world. The country with the next-highest number of dairy farms is Pakistan, with 14 million. (In both of these countries, the vast majority of dairy farms have fewer than 10 cows, according to the UN Food and Agricultural Organization.)

“India is expected to outpace the European Union and will become the largest milk producer in the world,” predicted the 2014 Agricultural Outlook.OECD-FAO Agricultural Outlook 2014.

It’s worth noting that the majority of Indian milk comes from buffaloes, not cows (the US is still the number one cow-milk-producing country in the world).According to the joint OECD-UN FAO Agricultural Outlook for 2014, most of India’s milk is consumed fresh (as opposed to powdered or canned).

We produce enough milk and food grains to feed our people what we lack in is food management. Processing and storage of produce. We need a revolution in this to make sure no one goes hungry in our country.

Lack of proper cold storage facilities is the problem! I wonder whether the Food Security Bill can ever be properly implemented with such an acute shortage of cold storage facilities!

.
but prices of milk and milk products are going up and up....! Big Shame ...if the scale cant give you the cost benefits!

That is because we export majority of it while our corrupt politicians till all these years have been mismanaging distribution of food and dairy products.

That is why we have scarce availability locally and abundant availability internationally.

If our management of food and dairy industry is done well with sincere political will, NO INDIAN will ever go hungry ever again.

Need more cold storage facilties and food processing units,Ban cow Slaughter and we will increase the milk and milk products more which can be sold cheaper to our population.
You don't kill a goose that lays golden eggs.

I agree with you. But secular losers will cry for banning cow slaughter.

Even if we are the world’s largest producer of milk, yields are among the lowest in the world..We need to work on that...We need to develop new breeds of cows and buffalos which can produce more litre per day..just increasing the number of live stocks wont solve the problem as it would come to an end at some point in time..

With the increased yeilds, supported by effective storage and mangement, NO INDIAN will ever go hungry ever again. FOR Sure!

Infrastructure, Infrastructure, Infrastructure.....

Thats what we need.

Pakistan milk production is 36.2 million tons per year, though the potential is much more.

This is what i got from Pak sources

''There are approximately 8.5 million families that produce most milk in Pakistan; 80 percent of which are small landless farmers. The per animal yield is below 2,000 liters per annum compared to 9,000 liters per annum in European countries.''

Please also post dairy farm equipment manufacturers and their products and addresses; keeping in mind the needs of small to medium dairy farms.
