Indian Navy is all set to go to Government of India for their principal approvals and sanctioning of funds to develop Second Indigenous aircraft carrier IAC-2 aka INS Vishal. India already operates Russian modified INS Vikramaditya and will soon have India’s first local developed INS Vikrant (IAC-I) which will be ready for Sea Trials from next year onwards.

Indian Navy plans to have a Three Carrier battle group hopefully by 2025 but key component in a Carrier battle group which is Fast Attack Nuclear submarines which are deployed and moves with Aircraft carrier is still missing and lone Russian leased INS Chakra Attack Nuclear submarine will be simply overwhelmed and conventional submarine will have to chip in to protect Carrier battle groups .

India’s quest to acquire Fast Attack Nuclear submarines goes back to Indo-Pakistan 1971 war over Bangladesh When 7th fleet of United States lead by Nuclear Powered Aircraft carrier USS Enterprise showed up in the Bay of Bengal with the intention to intervene and aid Pakistani Military in Bangladesh against Indian forces.

The only thing stopping USS Enterprise and its 70 od Fighter aircraft from intervening was Soviet Fast Attack Nuclear submarines which showed up just near USS Enterprise for easy spotting to declare that Moscow has arrived to back India event of American-backed intervention in the war.

A fascination for acquiring its own Fast Attack Nuclear submarine grew over the year for Indian Navy and Soviets agreed to transfer Charlie-class nuclear-powered cruise missile submarine to India on a lease which was renamed INS Chakra in Indian Navy kick started Advanced Technology Vessel (ATV) project to design and build nuclear-powered submarines locally in India.

INS Chakra was leased from the Soviet Union to get the first-hand experience for the Indian Naval crew and engineers to learn more about a nuclear-powered submarine, so that it can be replicated in developing country’s own Fast Attack Nuclear submarine.

Advanced Technology Vessel (ATV) project commenced in early 90’s at first concentrated to creating an Industrial base to put together all the components required to develop Nuclear submarines in India, but Pakistani going Nuclear in 1998 Nuclear tests and Kargil war followed in 1999 lead to major changes in India’s Nuclear submarine program.

No First Use (NFU) Nuclear Doctrine and desires to put in place a Second Nuclear strike capability lead to shifting from development of Fast Attack Nuclear submarine to development of Ballistic Missile Nuclear submarines which lead to the development of INS Arihant Class submersible ballistic, nuclear (SSBN).

India going nuclear tests for second time nearly two decades in 1998 altered India’s Nuclear submarine program but in 2016 current government finally cleared proposals given by Indian Navy to develop Six New Fast Attack Nuclear submarines in parallel to countries Ballistic Missile Nuclear submarine program comes as a major boost to rebuild its depleting undersea submarine fleet.

According to Naval experts, Indian Navy might have a requirement for 12 Fast Attack Nuclear submarines in ling term to face emerging threats in the Indian Ocean Region and to protect its Carrier battle groups .
