Indians riot as heat wave prompts power cuts

LUCKNOW: Thousands of people enraged by power cuts during an extreme heat wave have been rioting across northern India, setting electricity substations on fire and taking power company officials hostage, officials said Saturday.

The impoverished state of Uttar Pradesh has never had enough power for its 200 million people – about the population of Brazil – and many receive only a few hours a day under normal conditions, while 63 per cent of homes have no electricity access at all.

Recent temperatures that soared to 117 degrees Fahrenheit (47 Celsius) have caused power demand to spike at 11,000 megawatts – far higher than the state's 8,000 MW capacity – triggering blackouts that shut down fans, city water pumps and air conditioners.

Thousands of people stormed an electricity substation Friday near the state capital of Lucknow, ransacking offices and taking several workers hostage for 18 hours until police intervened Saturday morning, state utility official Narendra Nath Mullick said.

Elsewhere, an angry crowd set fire to an electricity substation in Gonda, 180 kilometers (112 miles) southeast of Lucknow.

It took three hours for firefighters to put out the flames on Friday.

Another substation was also set on fire in Gorakhpur, 320 kilometers (200 miles) southeast of Lucknow.

Chief Minister Akilesh Yadav said: “Officials were trying to purchase power from other states, though they were also facing shortages amid the extreme heat.”

Residents are particularly angry about the power cuts after receiving reliable supplies through the Indian elections that ended May 16.

Since then, only some regions have been guaranteed unbroken power supplies, while others have received little to none.

The High Court in the city of Allahabad is now hearing a petition alleging discrimination in power distribution, and has asked the government to explain why some regions allegedly were receiving preferential treatment.

Those regions include the city of Varanasi, the parliamentary constituency of new Prime Minister Narendra Modi, as well as constituencies held by Yadav and other top officials in the state's ruling party.

Meteorological officials said temperatures were likely remain high through at least Tuesday in Uttar Pradesh, Gujarat, Delhi and other north Indian areas.

“People are advised not to venture out of their homes,” said Lucknow-based weather official J.P. Gupta.

UP government (especially father-son duo) should face criminal charges for extreme incompetence and fueling of communal violence for political gain.

I live in ghaziabad UP so i can tell you it really has been bad since 16 th may .. this can be attributted to political revenge rather than lack of power suplpy ... things were made even worse by the storm around ten days ago that left many substations dysfunctional and are yet to be fixed

Indians are not disciplined and that is why they are making little progress.

Combine this with a weak central state and no wonder India is such a mess.

Actually,The father son duo samajwadi party was alleged to have cut power to those constituencies that didn't vote for them, while the constituencies where the party won had 24/7 electricity and with temperatures around 47 degrees now, people will riot in those unbearable conditions if UP CM plays this game of discrimination.
You could cut power on normal times but not in middle of summer when there is heat wave of 47 and 49 degrees in north india.People die in those temperatures, no kidding.

Power requirement surges from 8000MW to 11000MW due to the summer heat, resulting in powercut, and there you go, we got a Bangladeshi teaching us discipline...

Pata nhi kahan kahan se uth ke aa jaate hain...

If you yourself had an iota of discipline in yourself then you would taken a look at the topic of the title first and contributed likewise..You worry about your brethren who are escaping your own country to India to work as daily labourers..

India is facing power deficit of 42,000 MW. But the recent power cuts are primarily due to logistical issues (failure of feeders, transformers etc) and political issues than the supply issues.

Power situation cannot be improved without private sector's participation and to encourage private sector's participation we will have to implement anti-monopoly laws (certain big corporate houses raised billions from the market for power projects only to divert the money elsewhere) and get rid of socialist mindset (companies are run on profit).

I thought Hong Kong was bad, with temperatures around 32 C during the summer and ridiculous amounts of humidity!

I can't imagine 49 C, I would stay in air-conditioned buildings all day rather than run around in that heat.

That's why I love traveling to Northern China, the temperatures there are just so nice and cool. Heilongjiang is a bit too cold though, it can go to around -31 C.

Normally in summertime in India you have temperatures around 40-42 *C.But this time there was a massive heat wave in northern India since past week where temperatures touched 49C in delhi and 47C in some, good news is the Eastern monsoon winds have touched Kerala state shores, and we expect rainy season to start after 8 of this month, that will cool things down, untill then North India will have to bear the heat.

I remember my time in Chongqing it was too humid, sticky and made life miserable to go out. I spenT all the time in A/C in summer. On the contrary i enjoyed the winter there around 4-6*C. :D
But you could never predict the weather it's always random or changing everyday in Chongqing,it would rain even in summer being in the mountains.

The original transmission system was modelled around the British system and could not sustain itself in Indian scenario. Then some bright Indians created a "Made for India" model and it has worked well for us in a variety of weather conditions. Still the scorching heat @49 degrees kills the equipment. Also, our infrastructure (particularly on transmission side) hasn't been able to maintain pace with the demand.

Easy to say while sitting in an air conditioned room, right??? Just imagine living in temperatures above 45°C without Water and Electricity. Although agreed with second part of the post, Central government should be given more power allowing them to dismiss UP state govt. for its terrible administrative record.
