Well...I had surfing in mind...have never tried it...

Hmmm Try Hikkaduwa and Mirissa(Also great for Whale watching) close to Galle surfing hotspots and you'd be able to get some lessons But depending on the season you arrive and the duration of the stay you need to do Arugam Bay in the East coast.. On of the top ten surf hotspots in the world.. But probably a bit too advance for a novice.. The breaks there tend to be huge.. Just goolge these places up mate.. You might get some good deals..Cheers
