Tata Chemicals Ltd (BSE: 500770) is a Tata Group Company (India) based in Mumbai.[4] The company is one of the largest chemical companies in India with significant operations in India and Africa.[5]ata Chemicals has the second largest soda ash production capacity plant in India. This was the second soda ash plant built in India by Shri Kapilram Vakil that started operating in the year 1944. The township Mithapur, derives its name from "Mith" which means salt in Gujarati language.
Since 2006 Tata Chemicals has owned Brunner Mond, a United Kingdom-based chemical company with operations in Magadi (Kenya) and General Chemicals, in United States of America.
On March 27, 2008, Tata Chemicals Ltd acquired 100 per cent[7] stake in US-based General Chemical Industrial Products Inc (GCIP) for $1.05 billion (around Rs 4,000 crore) to become the world’s second largest maker of soda ash.[8] With all these acquisitions, combined capacity of production has increased to around 5.17 million tonnes of soda ash.
In April 2010, Tata Chemicals acquired 25% stake in ammonia-urea fertilizer complex in Gabon for US$290 million.[5] The first phase of the plant will have a full operational capacity of 2,200 million tonnes of ammonia and 3,850 million tonnes of urea per day.[5]


The Research and Development Centre (Tata Chemicals Innovation Centre) located at Pirangut, Pune (Maharashtra) started operations in 2004. The team of scientists is working in the following areas - Advanced materials, Biochemicals, Nano-tech and metabolites, and nutraceuticals.


The Tata Swach water purifier is developed by Tata Chemicals, a part of the Tata group in India.[1] The Swach was designed as a low cost purifier for Indian low-income groups, who lack access to safe drinking water.[2][3] The product is sold in three variants on the Indian market; Tata Swach, Tata Swach Smart and Tata Swach Smart Magic.[4]

Tata Coffee is coffee company owned by the Tata Group. The company owns 19 coffee estates in Southern India. The estates are spread across the districts of Coorg, Chickmaglur and Hassan in Karnataka and Valparai district in Tamil Nadu. Tata Coffee is the largest integrated coffee plantation company in the world.[1]

Tata Power (BSE: 500400) is India’s oldest and largest private sector power utility[3][citation needed] with an installed generation capacity of over 2977 MW.[4] On the 22 March 2011 it has announced partnership with Sunengy an Australian firm, to build India's first floating solar plant.[5]
