Sanawar boys unfurl Tricolour atop Everest - Hindustan Times

With the hoisting of the Tricolour and the school flag on the highest peak of the Everest, a seven-member team of students of The Lawrence School, Sanawar, has set a new record of being the youngest team to scale the Everest on Tuesday.

Four among the seven climbers of Class 12 are from Punjab, while others are from Delhi, Himachal Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh.

This herculean feat has accorded them the claim of being the only boarding school in the world to unfurl the Tricolour and the school flag atop the lofty peak. The school has also become the first school worldwide to send a team to the Mt Everest.

Six boys are 16 years of age and Raghav Juneja is of 15 years, making him the youngest Indian to scale the Mt Everest. He has now beaten the record of Arjun Vajpai, who was 16 when he scaled the Everest.

Many expeditions have trudged atop the Everest since Edmund Hillary and Sherpa Tensing summited the peak way back in 1953.

Sixty years later, seven students of Sanawar made the history and glorified their alma mater.

The team - Sanawar Everest Expedition 2013 - led by Col Neeraj Rana (retd), former principal, Himalayan Mountaineering Institute (HMI), Darjeeling, was shortlisted among the volunteers after a gruelling basic mountaineering course at Himalayan Mountaineering Institute.

The team members - Privthvi Chahal, Ajay Sohal, Raghav Joneja, Shubham Kaushik, Fateh Brar, Guribadat Singh and Hakikat Grewal - arrived at the base camp in Nepal on April 19.

Congratulating the boys, school headmaster Praveen Vashisht said the conquest of the Everest was not a mere step, but a giant leap for Sanawar.

"They have indomitably upheld their school credo - Never Give In - in letter and spirit," he quipped.

wow....congrates to the boys!! We are proud of them..

Thank GOD, they made it safely.

BTW I am not in favor of doing these treks by school going children as anything can happen.

Why not ?

Anything can happen anywhere anytime, cannot stop living.

Challenges bring out the best.

Climbing Mt. Everest is not a child play. You will have to respect Mother Nature.

If things would have gone otherwise, I am sure, you had been in my side cursing the coordinators.

Never

Been to that school myself. Great for the outdoors.

There are more chances of being killed by a Blue Line Bus in Delhi than in the outdoors.

As mentioned in post no 1 the boys went thru rigorous training at HMI. One boy was pulled back after 22000 ft as there was a prob with his Oxygen cylinder.

No one takes chances yet no one is scared.

See what an event like this does to these young men for life ! Their self confidence will be sky high.

Respect to your opinion, but can't think of happy conditions every time.

Dying under blue line buses is inevitable as people have to carry out their respective jobs but climbing Mt Everest is something different that can be avoided in earlier stage of life. Isn't it?
Need to keep in mind that everyone is not so lucky as these children are.....

Agreed.

If people always thought this way United States Of America & the sea route to India would never have been discovered .

No one would go down in a submarine or close down in a tank.

Have faith in yourself.

Dying under a blue line is most definitely not ' inevitable', being run over by bad drivers thanks to corrupt & indifferent Police does not come with the job.
