Southern Railways is set to install solar power plants at 18 stations in northern Tamil Nadu. 17 of these stations are situated in Chennai and the suburbs of the metropolitan city.

The Tamil Nadu Pollution Control Board (TNPCB) has given its consent for the operation of the concerned plants.

The 18 stations are as follows: Avadi, Arakkonam, Beach, Chengalpet, Egmore, MGR Central, Jolarpet, Singaperumal Koil, Perungalathur, Guduvanchery, Tiruvallur, Mambalam, Palavanthangal, Guindy, Velachery, Tirutanni, Perambur and Tambaram.

Our endeavour is to make Chennai division carbon neutral and zero waste. Chennai Central has become the first railway station of Southern Railway to meet its energy demand during day time with solar energy,” Chennai divisional railway manager Ganesh was quoted in a report by The Economic Times.

He added, “Nine 5KWp of solar plants have been provided in office, service and station buildings in Chennai division.”

Moreover, the authorities have provided 36 additional point-of-sale (PoS) to the passenger reservation and the integrated unreserved ticketing system counters to encourage more cashless transactios.

The Railways has also proposed rolling out 130 automatic ticket vending machines (ATVMs) at the concerned stations.

Ganesh also revealed that the speed of goods trains has been increased to 50 km/hour whereas mail and express trains in the division have maintained a punctuality of 94.5 per cent.

If coal prices continue to remain high because of international conflicts, then it makes renewable energy installations more feasible

Yes that's what we are seeing. Hardly hearing of any new coal based power plants, all solar, hydro, nuclear or wind.

The Germans are planning to spend on a lot on renewable power in near future. I think there will be a large order for solar panels from international buyers. China may take the cake, but I see good opportunity here for India as well. Think there was recent news about some solar manufacturers setting up manufacturing in India. India EU FTA will come in handy! :big_boss:

I think the Germans can help us with Electric Vehicles and Battery storages tech and take Solar panels from India. German companies can set up their own panel manufacturing factories in India and import from here, Chinese won't allow a German company to be competitive in China, they will force their own companies on the Germans. An FTA with EU would be sweet at this stage.
