Indian Projects in Afghanistan

India has committed over US$ 2 billion to Afghanistan in the form of a variety of development and humanitarian assistance projects including three flagship infrastructure projects – namely, construction of the Salma Dam in Herat province, construction of the Afghan Parliament Building in Kabul, and setting up of power sub-stations at Doshi- Charikar in northern Afghanistan. In 2012-13, 2013-14 and 2014-15, total amounts of Rs 490 crores, Rs 585.3 crores and Rs 650 crores respectively were spent in fulfilment of these and other assistance commitments.

Government continuously takes steps to upgrade security arrangements for Indian workers at various project sites in close consultations with Afghan security agencies.

The Minister of State for the external Affairs Gen. Dr. V. K. Singh (Retd.) provided this information in reply to a question in Lok Sabha today.

Uma Bharti praises WAPCOS work in Afghanistan

Company pays record dividend to the Government
Union Minister for Water Resources, River Development and Ganga Rejuvenation Sushri Uma Bharati has praised the work carried out by WAPCOS Ltd, a PSU of her Ministry, in Afghanistan under adverse circumstances. Speaking on the occasion of the dividend and bonus share payment ceremony of the company in New Delhi today the Minister urged WAPCOS to join her Ministry in Namami Gange Programme with full vigour.

Earlier Shri R.K. Gupta, Chairman-cum-Managing Director, WAPCOS Limited presented Dividend Cheque of Rs. 16.50 crore for the year 2014-2015 and bonus shares of Rs. 1000 lakhs to the Union Minister. During the year 2014-2015, the Company has achieved the highest ever Gross Income of Rs. 928.30 crore, Profitability of Rs. 111.05 crore and secured New Business of Rs. 1375.92 crore. The Net worth of WAPCOS has reached Rs.309.31 crore.

The dividend of Rs.16.50 crore is the highest ever since inception of the Company with 10% growth over the previous year. WAPCOS is eligible for “Excellent” Rating on the basis of its performance in all Financial and Dynamic parameters under MOU such as Turnover; Profitability; New Business; Projects Implementation; Customer Satisfaction; Human Resource Management etc.

The Company forayed and forged ahead to secure new business in countries like Angola, Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Benin, Bhutan, Burkina Faso, Burundi, Cambodia, Central African Republic, Chad, DR Congo, Ethiopia, Ghana, Guinea Conakry, Kenya, Lao PDR, Lesotho, Liberia, Malawi, Maldives, Mali, Mongolia, Mozambique, Myanmar, Nepal, Niger, Nigeria, Philippines, Rwanda, Senegal, Sierra Leone, South Sudan, Sri Lanka, Swaziland, Tanzania, Trinidad and Tabago, Togo, Uganda, Yemen and Zimbabwe by virtue of which WAPCOS increased its presence in many countries and also facilitated strengthening of bilateral relations between India and other countries. WAPCOS is now planning to increase its operations in Latin America and CIS Countries.

The Union Cabinet, chaired by the Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi today gave its ex-post facto approval for completion of the Afghan Parliament Building in Kabul by 31st December, 2015 at a revised project cost of Rs.969 crore.

The government of India is mulling to build low-cost houses in Afghanistan in a bid to help resolve the housing issues of the Afghan refugees repatriating to country, it has been reported.

India’s joint secretary for development partnership agreement in ministry of external affairs M Subbarayudu informed regarding the plan yesterday.

He was speaking during a gathering for the first ever training batch of officers from Afghan Revenue Department, at National Academy of Direct Taxes (NADT).

Without disclosing further information regarding the possible housing scheme in Afghanistan, Mr. Subbarayudu said the Indian government will also focus on sectors like irrigation and distribution of medicines.

“India has built roads connecting key cities in the country and set up power transmission lines. The Chahbhar port in Iran, which is a being developed as a part of trilateral agreement between India, Iran and Afghanistan will provide a key link between the nations,” he was quoted as saying by The Times of India.

This comes as Indian has played a major role in the reconstruction of Afghanistan since the fall of the Taliban regime and has invested over $2 billion in various reconstruction and infrastructure projects.

The construction of the major Salma Dam, the new Afghan parliament building, Zaranj-Delaram highway, and some other projects are among the key investments India has done so far in the country.

In the meantime, the government of India announced a new aid package of $1 billion for the reconstruction of Afghanistan.

The Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi reaffirmed New Delhi’s support to Afghanistan as he announced the aid package during President Mohammad Ashraf Ghani’s visit to India last year.

The government of India intends to spend around $450 million in housing projects in Afghanistan, it has been reported.

The Ministry of Urban Development and Housing informed regarding India’s intention following a meeting between the Indian Ambassador Manpreet Vohra Minister Syed Sadat Mansoor Naderi.

Ambassador Vohra said the Ministry of Urban Development and Housing should share their plans and models regarding the housing projects to be constructed in various parts of the country.

The Ministry of Urban Development and Housing said it is busy working on models as part of the national urban development plan to be compatible with the environment and living conditions, natural, social and economic aspects.

The Afghan defense officials reacted at the allegations of a Pakistani official regarding the alleged destructive role of India, calling it as baseless.

General Dawlat Waziri, spokesman for the Ministry of Defense in response to the allegations of the Pakistani official, said that New Delhi has no military presence in Afghanistan, rejecting the misunderstanding of Islamabad claiming that the country is fuelling anti-Pakistan feelings with its presence in Afghanistan.

He said India is only providing training and study opportunities to the Afghan army cadets and that New Delhi has military presence in Afghanistan.

Pakistan’s Defence Minister Khawaja Mohammad Asif, on Thursday, said that the state was serious about improving relations between Pakistan and Afghanistan.

Speaking to a private news channel, the minister claimed the strained relations between the two countries was due to Indian influence on Afghanistan’s side, according to The Express Tribune newspaper.
