Kuala Lumpur, Mar 13 (PTI) An advanced Indian offshore patrol vessel, Sankalp, will sail into Malaysia''s Port Klang tomorrow on a 6-day goodwill visit, cementing long standing maritime ties between the two countries.

Under the command of Deputy Inspector General S D Bhanot, the Indian Coast Guard ship will berth at the port from March 14 to 19, a statement issued by the High Commission said.

The Indian Coast Guard and Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency both share common perceptions on measures to fight Piracy at Sea, Search and Rescue Operations, Law Enforcement Measures, Pollution Control Measures, Protection of Oil and Energy Resources and Maritime Patrolling, it said.

"The ship, commissioned in 2008, is an advanced offshore patrol vessel, first of its class and has been indigenously designed and built in India.

The 105 meter-long and 2300 ton ship, fitted with most advanced equipment with state-of-the-art technology, has endurance of approximately one month and has two indigenous 30-mm CRN-91 gun along with fire control systems mounted on it," it said.

The ship, designed to carry one twin engine ALH Bhanot, will also host senior officials of Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency and civil dignitaries during the Ship''s stay at Port Klang, it added.

This 2200 Ton "Advanced Offshore Patrol Vessel" is bigger than most corvettes and Frigates in other navies.

. . .
A very pretty ship. I would put bigger guns on it, though.:woot:

No need as you have to look at its role - it is NOT a Navy/military vessel, its primary roles are SAR and limited interdiction i.e policing smugglers/poachers/dumpers etc and these guys don't usually put up much of a fight as such the armenent on board is perfectly adequate given its role.

I like the Norwegian Skjold-class patrol boats. I would like to see Iraq get some of these! Stealthy, 76mm autocannon, 12.7mm machine guns, Mistral SAM, and 8 NSMs carried internally, and they go 60 knots!

But are they Coast Guard Patrol Vessels or Naval Warships? A Coast Guard Patrol vessel will hardly go around trying to shoot down aircraft or sink submarines. Therefore their armament outfits are custom-made for their tasks. Check out the USCG patrol craft.

The difference is not in white and black. But they can be differentiated vaguely as under :
1. A frigate has smaller displacements (~ 4000-5000 tonnes) whereas a destroyer is larger with displacements ranging till 12000 tonnes. ( frigates with ~8000 tonne displacements have been in ussr service in past though).
2. A frigate is generally equipped to handle only one type of mission. eg. submarine warfare or antiship etc. whereas a destroyer may be equipped to handle 2-3 different types of missions simultaneously.
3. A frigate generally has 1 mission tower whereas destroyer may have 2.

still larger in this category is a warship. I dont think many countries employ warships anymore with the advent of aircraft carriers.

googling will clear your doubts.

Rather they are called Cruisers. And the active cruisers in service are the Kirov class (nuclear powered) in the Russian Navy and the Ticonderoga class (conventional powered) in the USN.

The last Battle Cruisers were built from 1912-1939. The fact that they (like dinosaurs) have become extinct speaks for itself.
But to explain in concise terms they were very heavy and lumbering ships with heavy guns of 12-14 inch caliber, manually loaded, but with a range less than most short ranged missiles of today. OKAY!
