Sydney: If the search for an alien life has not yielded any conclusive results in the last 50 years, it is probably because life on other planets was brief and has gone extinct soon after its origin owing to runaway heating or cooling on their planets, say astrobiologists led by an Indian origin scientist.

“The universe is probably filled with habitable planets, so many scientists think it should be teeming with aliens,” said Aditya Chopra from Australian National University (ANU).

“Early life is fragile so we believe it rarely evolves quickly enough to survive,” he added in a paper published in the journal Astrobiology.

“Most early planetary environments are unstable. To produce a habitable planet, life forms need to regulate greenhouse gases such as water and carbon dioxide to keep surface temperatures stable,” Dr Chopra added.

About four billion years ago the Earth, Venus and Mars may have all been habitable. However, a billion years or so after formation, Venus turned into a hothouse and Mars froze into an icebox.

“Early microbial life on Venus and Mars, if there was any, failed to stabilise the rapidly changing environment,” said co-author associate professor Charley Lineweaver.

“Life on Earth probably played a leading role in stabilising the planet’s climate,” he noted.

According to Dr Chopra, their theory has solved a puzzle.

“The mystery of why we haven’t yet found signs of aliens may have less to do with the likelihood of the origin of life or intelligence and have more to do with the rarity of the rapid emergence of biological regulation of feedback cycles on planetary surfaces,” he explained.

Wet and rocky planets, with the ingredients and energy sources required for life seem to, be ubiquitous. However, as physicist Enrico Fermi pointed out in 1950, no signs of surviving extra-terrestrial life have been found.

A solution to Fermi’s paradox, say the researchers, is near universal early extinction which they have named the “Gaian Bottleneck”.

“One intriguing prediction of the ‘Gaian Bottleneck’ model is that the vast majority of fossils in the universe will be from extinct microbial life, not from multicellular species such as dinosaurs or humanoids that take billions of years to evolve,” Lineweaver pointed out.

Isn't it pretty simple :
If (alien == exist)
{
if (intelligent)
{
"Give example of Humans not interested in ants"
}
else "Not intelligent enough to contact"
}
else "no question of contact"

.
We do not know the possible forms of life that can exist in our universe. Our experience of and definition of "intelligent" life is limited to planet earth only.
If we assume that on other planet a similar life form exists then its a matter of debate that how and when and why they can or cannot contact us.

There are more galaxies in the universe that all the grains of sand on earth and then some. And each of those galaxies contain billions of stars. Advanced civilizations were probably flourishing millions if not billions of years even before our Solar System came into existence!! And this guy says there's nothing left of them now just because they've never contacted us? We are probably just like vermin to them!

They are already here! Check this out...

According Einstein's theory of relativity, we are in the gravity well of Sun, Earth and other planets too (even though minutely). Then our time on earth should keep changing in correlation to perturbation caused by other planets. Although not much, but our time should be relatively slower than aliens (if) aproaching us. And if our time is half slower than them (which i doubt) and if they cross 50% speed of light, for us they will be moving faster than the light for us?

And what about the time dilation caused by nearby stars of our own galaxy? So travelling one galaxy to other galaxy should be faster?

space is so vast....... if a habitable planet was within 100 light years of our sol system. it would take 100 years for for their radio signals to reach us and 100 years for them receive our return message, but this is also assuming both of our civilizations are active at the same time.

point being it's just very unlikely any two advance alien species to be living in the same era and then even if they are the distances are just too vast to communicate and visit one another.

Don't worry boys. when i take over the world, one of first priorities will be taking over any and all other worlds. Who gives a shit about poverty at home when i can entertain the masses with aliens dragged in victory processions!

What about the Wow! signal?

One plausible explanation was a metallic asteroid was moving near the earth at that particular time, which reflected other earth based radio waves back to earth, hence unexpected increase in the intensity for a very short frame of time.

Or its a precursor to an Alien Invasion :o:

It is really really irritating that so many reports start with the term 'Indian origin scientist...'....how the heck does it matter whether the guy is Indian origin or not? He had NOTHING to do with making himself of Indian origin!

Can one not be proud of accomplishments and not of origins?

I'm guessing its an Indian source, they take pride in anything a foreigner who left India does anything good without realising he is not Indian. Didn't bring this point earlier as i wanted to stick on topic.
