What's new

Indian Navy's TU-142ME has max range of 12,000 KM

Then why we upgrading old TU142???

Because I don't think we bought off the entire line in one go. The inductions would have included relatively newer ones then which means that they might still have some years left in them.

The Tu-142/95 Bear has an amazing endurance.

Pardon me for reviving an old thread, but I was curious as to what exactly is the difference in the roles of Tu-142, IL-38 and P-8Is ?

The way I see it, the IL-38 has the shortest range of the three and yet it is projected to be in service longer than the Tu142s. What benefits does the Il-38 offer in terms of long range recon/anti sub warfare over the Tu142?

.
The Tu-142 has the endurance longer than any of the aircraft in the IN inventory . Stays longer over for period of time to detect enemy surface, submerged vessels.
However only detection though they carried some ASW weapons as well. Now that will be changed as P8 will take over that role.

I thought the IL 38s were stationed in Dabolim and not the Tu 142. Tu 142s home base is in INS Rajali in Arakonam if I am right. Forget my negligence.

While the Tu-142s home-base is Arakonam; they regularly fly out on sorties out of INS Hansa at Dabolim. That is the base from where they cover the Arabian Sea from Ras al Hadd to Bab el Mandeb to Cape Guardafui sector. They operate from both Air Stations.

The role assigned to the Tu-142 Bear is indicated in the OP. It is primarily a LRMR aircraft with AShW capability with now an added LACM capability. Also has a Strategic Role, while ASW role is now seconded to the Il-38s and the P-8Is.

So new radars and avionics upgrades have been completed? And any idea which cruise missile? The KH family or Indian?

The Klubs are already integrated, Air-launched Brahmos is a work in progress. Likely that the Nirbhay will also be integrated in some time.
While the Il-38s had been re-equipped for Sea Eagles. But that program has been overtaken by the Poseidons with Harpoons.
