Indian Navy's missile test plan from Andaman and Nicobar Islands hits green hurdle

NEW DELHI: The Indian Navy's plans to test fire missiles from Andaman and Nicobar Islands appear to have hit a hurdle with the environment ministry concerned over the impact of the exercise on an endangered bird species found only in the ecologically sensitive area.

The environment ministry, examining the Navy proposal for missile testing in Tillanchang island, has been told by a panel of experts that the firing will impact the life cycle of Nicobar Megapode, an endangered ground bird, National Board for Wildlife member Asad Rahmani said.

The Navy has sought permission for temporary use of the ecologically sensitive forest land on the island for missile testing and erection of a temporary structure as target for testing the accuracy of missiles fired from submarines. The test firing is proposed to be carried out once every year for a duration of 7 to 10 days.

The Standing Committee of National Board for Wildlife (NBWL) at a recent meeting chaired by environment minister Jayanthi Natarajan examined the proposal and ordered a site inspection by a two-member panel.

Rahmani said Megapodes are found only in the Andaman & Nicobar Islands and their population has declined dramatically in recent years. Studies have indicated that Megapodes come back to the same place for nesting. "The time and season of firing would be the critical elements in assessing the impact of such firing on the species," he said.

Good one mate...

Although if In is looking for just temporary erection of facility, i think In should have thought of a few more sites in the first place itself, not to mention IN should have thought for a permanent location in the first place. This temporary stuff is the reason behind the missile testing troubles in Orissa. Nobody is saying we cannot test in Lakshadweep islands. We have so many islands and we can find out an appropriate island but we gotta look for it.

As far as environment ministry is concerned, it looks like this bird is migratory and they don't stay at a place for a long time, so what the f**k is the problem ? IN can change the time of testing as per the birds schedule :hitwall:.

Not to mention have these idiots we consulted IN about when they conduct these tests and if it would in anyway even effect these birds in the first place ?

If any of our enemy conquer Andman then what these people will say.. "Dont destroy natural greenery you can take away land from us"...
height of stupidity :hitwall:.. we should look in to both the ankles.

I really get frustrated with these types of attitude in India, if we do something in populated areas they will say that it can harm population and if we do it in remote and unpopulated areas they will say it can harm environment, wild life, goats, birds and bees. :hitwall:

Relax buddy ! As some member has already said.. we can erect testing sites in lakshyadeep islands as well.. or Andaman and Nicobar are like a group of thousand islands. We can use one of them away from breeding grounds and test during non breeding times..

i second u on that one.. I personally prefer some remote lakshyadeep island testing of missiles means installation of radars, and that means more security, so 2 birds hit with one stone.

absolutely, moreover I guess the IN's insistence on Andaman n Nicobar is to monitor the malacca straights or The ports of myanmar which China may be developing.... just my guess..

Luckily, next time, when Jayanthi Natarajan and Jairam Ramesh will come begging for votes.. we will have a choice again... Let's take right decisions to tell em what is more important... a geese or national interests...

i am still surprised that why such a news came out in public? the civil establishment is just awesome at leaking news. Pathetic!

Quite a lot of Ministers are through Rajya Sabha in UPA regime. eg. Pranabda until very recently was through rajya sabha, MMS was through Rajya Sabha, and that sod Jairam ramesh is through rajya sabha as well..

if representation of congress reduces in lok sabha, they are automatically ejected from house majority in rajya sabha... and if they are minority in lok sabha, they can't pull in new losers from rajya sabha and can't form the government... mantra is still simple, vote judiciously... and u will see how this congress led chain is broken :)
