Indian Navy takes charge of US ship Trenton

NORFOLK, VIRGINIA: Within hours of the monstrous tsunami that struck the subcontinent’s eastern flank in December 2004, the Indian Navy commandeered and dispatched nearly a fourth of its fleet for relief and rescue. Thirty-eight ships, big and small, raced to help the tens of thousands in Tamil Nadu and Sri Lanka whose lives were devastated by the calamity.

But when the ships reached the tsunami-hit areas, they found piers and jetties wrecked. Although the Indian Navy overcame myriad obstacles to bring off a stupendous relief act, one which was universally hailed, ''it was also a moment when we felt an acute need for an amphibious landing ship,'' according to a commander who was involved in the operation.

That gaping hole in the Indian armada was filled to a large extent on Wednesday when the Indian Navy took charge of USS Trenton , a massive amphibious loading dock, in an elegant handing over ceremony at the Norfolk Naval Base in Virginia. The 17,000 ton vessel will be the second largest ship in the Indian Navy after the aircraft carrier Viraat , and the first American ship to join the Indian fleet.

Officials say the ship, which is still undergoing repairs and refurbishing in Norfolk, will be in the US till May before it leaves for India, where it is expected to join the Eastern Naval Command in Vishakapatnam.

In a charming coincidence, US ports will also be getting a look once again in May at the Indian Navy’s INS Tarangini , one of the world’s most admired tall (sailing) ships, that won both praises and prizes during a visit here in 2005.

But with its six H-3 Sea King transport helicopters and an assortment of smaller boats, the Trenton flotilla, which will be formally commissioned into the Indian Navy as INS Jalashva (Sanskrit for river horse or hippopotamus), is in a different league altogether. It is expected to expand India’s aspiring blue water navy to enable both troop movements and relief and rescue on both sides of the subcontinent.

As of Wednesday, the vessel was formally decommissioned from the US Navy, and a full complement of more than 300 Indian sailors and 27 officers led by Captain B S Ahluwalia (VSM) took charge. They have already been in Norfolk for several weeks now literally learning the ropes about one of America’s most trusted vessels.

Trenton was commissioned in 1971 and has seen action in Lebanon and Somalia among other places, landing US troops and rescuing American citizens. New Delhi purchased the ship for a $ 48.44 million, including choppers and boats, a prize that some officials said was a bargain. The ship is expected to serve in the Indian Navy for at least 15 more years.

The Trenton experience could also lead New Delhi to consider other US purchases. The Indian Navy has long considered having at least three aircraft carriers in its armada. With the Russian carrier Gorshkov joining INS Viraat , there is some talk of having another carrier, particularly since Viraat itself, of 1945 vintage, is nearing the end of its life.

The catch: each of the US Navy’s two dozen aircraft carriers – a dozen in service and a dozen in reserve – is a humongous vessel. Most of them are in the 75,000-100,000 ton range, are nuclear-powered, and cost in the billions. They are considered way above both India’s requirement and cost, even if they came at the cut rate price of Trenton .

By all accounts it is a knackered hulk that the US Navy were keen to get rid of.

One mans junk is anothers treasure so India is welcome to it.

Its being reworked, it is supposed to have 15yrs life left, It will be a good example for Indians to built their future LPD's

Why would yo call it a junk?

It's junk when someone gets rid of something, and another man buyies it (up grading is a different thing) is their any link to support at India will upgrade it, if not just don't toss crap out.

Its not a destroyer or a frigate or an aircraft carrier. Its a landing platform. Do you not understand what it is required for??

What the hell will you upgrade it with. It would be fit with Barak at best and BrahMos(it doesnt even need that). Its purpose is not to destroy another ship, its to land troops on a beach. It gives India an amphibious assault capability, its for the MARCOS. All it needs is a defense instrument and some basic guns, etc to fire on the beach if required.

Again, apart from giving India this crucial capability, it will aid in the design of the indegenous LPD.

dragonking lets be a bit specific shall we?

this thing can produce 3 MW of power.
It carries 6 Sea king helos which IN bought with the contract which can be vital for any role.

It can cary couple of VTOL ac's if needed.

It can be great in peacetime operations and formulating an effective Amphibious doctrine.
Also i have reports works r still done on it, will join karwar base by march.

We have plans to build better LPD's after having a effective doctrine.

Did you read the main article? First read and then speak.

And its not some platform that will launch an attack on moon to have it upgraded extensively.

Upgrading to identify threats (radar), defense systems on their, any specs about the Helis and what their capable off, any upgrading the frame (outer of the ship)?! How does this fit Indian navy doctrine, is it just for trans port or possibly invasion use, cause aganist Pakistan we can just blow this crap from the water?!

Man!! everything is written quite clearly in the main article that the ship is undergoing refurbishment. Obviously it will be fit with teh best radars the IN deems necessary on such a platform. It already has helicoptors and it is said that Harriers or VTOL aircrafts can operate from it. The IN wont leave the ship unprotected. If it didnt fit the IN's doctrine or if they did not need this ship the IN wouldnt have bought it. We are not a weak nation that will buy any military hardware just cuz its being given to us. We have the money and economy to support our militarily. We donot need any military aid.

BTW How the hell do u think Pakistan will blow this 'crap' from the water??
and they dont got any missiles that would penetrate Barak. This ship is going to be the second largest ship in the IN right after Viraat. Its obvious the IN wont not upgrade it or put up defenses in it. The IN said it would be a flotilla. This means more ships with it. It gives IN the ability to land 1000 troops on any beach.

BTW, stop giving ur analysis Coz PN dont even have this 'crap'. The IN would have fit whatever it felt necessary to have plus more.

It would be wise to not to talk about this issue.

Are you aware of how many in your opinion (junk) ships Pakistan buys from United Kingdom and United States?

Goodness. :disagree:

Actually you stole the words from my mouth webby. That was going to be my next argument if dragonking responded to my previous post. I was kinda reserving this as the last line of defense LOL:rofl:

@ Dragonking: I hope you have read the above article properly and done some googling and FOUND out that Trenton would be upgraded.

OMG!! neo shoo i need some sugar.
dragonking,

1> doctrine is develped when u have the stuff.
2> GET OVER the friggin paranoia IN against pakistan.
3> will support troops in our island installations, we are making 3 naval base in 3 islands.
4> peacetime evacuations in masses.
5> ASW operations.

etc etc.........

webby lol :D

No doubt, we have junk aswell., i'm not saying we don't. But what real purpose will it serve is beyond me., US invading is a different story, etc since they did it mostly from land, but if India is planning to do it thorugh water on another nation for example wouldn't it just be a failure, US got on normandy but at a very high cost.

We are not a weak nation that will buy any military hardware just cuz its being given to us.

Thats why you guyies went and bought more T-90s? Come on I can pull more if you want.
