Indian Made EW System To Have 500 km range

India’s Defence Research and Development Organization (DRDO) is currently developing an indigenous electronic warfare (EW) systems that will have a range of up to 500 kilometers when fitted on UAVs and aircraft.

The range will scale up further when fitted aboard satellites launched by Indian Space Research Organisation, a DRDO official said.

The EW system currently used by India is ground-based EW systems fitted on naval platforms with a range of only 10 to 20 kilometers.

A prototype of a synthetic aperture radar developed at the Electronics and Radar Development Establishment, a Bangalore-based laboratory under DRDO, will be flight-tested on an aircraft this year.

The estimated to cost to develop the EW is about $5 billion, and the bulk of these systems are being developed by state-owned Bharat Electronics Ltd. (BEL).

This is not meant as a replacement for ew pod of a fighter. There can be various other types of EW system.
For example, these, from DRDO

SAMYUKTA is a joint DRDO and Army integrated EW programme. This programme, which is software and integration intensive, is meant to develop an indigenous production base for futuristic integrated EW systems. It has communication & non-communication segments and the whole system is meant for mobile, tactical battlefield use. The system comprising of about 140 entities has the capabilities for surveillance, interception, monitoring, analysis, recording, location fixing and jamming of all communicatiion and radar signals (from HF to MMW band).

SANGRAHA is a joint EW Programme of DRDO and Navy. The system comprises of a family of EW suites for different Naval platforms capable of intercepting, detecting and classifying pulsed, CW, PRF agile, frequency agile and chirp radars. The systems employ modular approach facilitating deployment on a variety of platforms viz. helicopters, vehicles, small ships etc. Certain specific platforms apart from ESM also have ECM capabilities. State-of-the-art technologies like Multiple Beam Phased array jammers are employed in the system for simultaneous handling of multiple threats.

Any military action involving the use of electromagnetic and directed energy to control the electromagnetic spectrum or to attack the enemy. The three major subdivisions within electronic warfare are electronic attack, electronic protection, and electronic warfare support

Actually 5billion $ is not the development cost but the expected market by 2020 for just electronics warfare systems.
