The trading organisations at Benapole land port on Wednesday morning stopped import of Indian goods protesting against the refusal of Bangladeshi export items at Indian side.

As a consequence, the export-import works came to a standstill since then, forcing hundreds of goods laden trucks to wait on both sides of the port.

Amid the worldwide crisis over coronavirus, export-import activities had been suspended at the land port for around three months.

Although Indian goods import resumed at Benapole on June 7, export of Bangladeshi items remains suspended. The Indian government and traders did not allow Bangladeshi goods to enter the country.

Protesting against the incident, clearing and forwarding agent employees at the port declared not to import goods from the neighbouring country in a tit-for-tat move.
Mofizur Rahman Sajan, president of Benapole C&F Agents Association, said the export traders took the decision protesting refusal of their products at Indian side.

“No Indian goods entered the country through the court since 9am,” he added.

Shamimur Rahman, assistant revenue officer at Benapole Customs, also confirmed the matter, saying import trades remained suspended since morning.

Contacted, General Secretary of Petrapole C&F Agents Welfare Association, said they don’t allow Bangladeshi goods to enter the country due to the risk of coronavirus infection.

“It’s up to the Bangladeshi traders whether they will import Indian items or not,” he said, expressing firm stance on their position.

Mamun Kabir Tarafdar, director of Benapole port, said around 500 trucks await at the port for entering India with export items.

But, why India itself should ban imports from BD? It seems Hazrat Hasina Bibi's HILSHA diplomacy and Momen's Husband-Wife diplomacy both failed to win the heart of Indian politicians and people. In reality, they still regard BD as just the old east Pakistan, an enemy country with a new name.

BAL stupids should now change its slogan from Joi Bangla to BHARAT MATA KI JOI!!!! The relationship will then rise to a new level, from the Husband-Wife to a Mother-Son one.

It’s not enemy just to treat as a milking cow and get benefited only.

Otherwise how on earth India just want to export to Bangladesh and not allow import from Bangladesh.

Export to Bangladesh through the Petrapole land port was suspended “indefinitely” since Wednesday morning after some Bangladeshi traders allegedly stopped the Indian cargo from entering Benapole on the other side of the border.

Bangladeshi traders said they would not let in Indian trucks till the time Indian authorities allowed import to resume through the Petrapole land port.

“Some Bangladeshi traders stopped import (from India) on the grounds that they cannot export (to India)...In the absence of clear instructions from the Bengal government, we cannot resume imports (from Bangadesh),” said Petrapole land port manager Suvajit Mandal.

The total annual trade through the Petrapole-Benapole route is in excess of Rs 35,000 crore.

Concerned over the developments, the Federation of Indian Export Organisations’ Calcutta chapter wrote a letter to Mamata Banerjee seeking her immediate intervention to end this impasse.

FIEO Calcutta’s regional chairman Sushil Patwari, in the letter, said Indian manufacturers, including MSMEs, were falling short of essential supplies and raw materials, affecting sales and trade commitments. He added it was necessary to accept import cargo for the sake of fairness in international trade between India and Bangladesh.

Export from India through Petrapole resumed on June 7 following approval of the Bengal government, which issued specific standard operating procedures to tackle the Covid-19 threat.

No such guideline, however, was issued by the government, for resuming import or the entry of goods from Bangladesh, angering the traders of the neighbouring country.

Petrapole Clearing Agents’ Staff Welfare Association secretary Kartick Chakraborty said: “It (the impasse) is a matter of genuine concern as traders of both the countries are suffering huge losses.”

Officials in the North 24 Pargana district administration refused to comment, only saying state secretariat Nabanna would take the final call after examining the Covid situation in Benapole, a hotspot.

Bangladesh's favourite daughter, the CM of WB, gradually turning over a new leaf as the election dates approach fast. All the money pumped into the illegal accounts of Bangla Pokkho has been in vain, it seems! Wonder what the resident fanboys have to say now.

First go back to your real country.

@Nilgiri the Great, long time no see!! What happened to you? It is good to see one kitten almost like my own pet, Bell. Japanese would call it Beru. But, remain gentle in order not to get banned again.

BD posters here have become fond of your continuous barge of thorny comments. Everyone probably missed you.

Do not worry about BAL policy. It is now wooing Chinese investments. The Chinese will invest in BD industries and will then export finished goods to India.

However, India is as usual pulling BD legs by imposing bar on importing from BD. But, how long?

Bold part: Why do you think BAL has been forced to accept Chinese investment when our country is seeking all kinds of investments from any country? Chinese have built many factories in BD already, and more such Chinese investment is most welcome.
