Indian Firm Signs $110 Mln Contract for Production of Russian ATGM for Army

09.01.2019

Russia and India had signed a $225 million contract to supply about 10,000 Konkurs anti-tank missiles to the Indian Armed Forces in 2012. Konkurs are partially produced in India under Russian license.

New Delhi (Sputnik) — India's state-owned Bharat Dynamics Limited (BDL) has signed a contract worth $110 million with the Indian Army for the production and supply of Konkurs Anti-Tank Guided Missiles (ATGM) and Launchers. The contract was signed on Tuesday by V Gurudatta Prasad, Director of production at BDL in New Delhi.

"The missiles and launchers will be manufactured under continued technical collaboration with Russia at the Bhanur unit of BDL in Telangana State," a statement issued by BDL said.

BDL has been producing Konkurs ATGMs under Russian license at the Bhanur facility. The missiles have been upgraded with a tandem warhead.

The order for the missiles is considered as a stopgap measure to quickly address the capability gap of around 68,000 anti-tank guided missiles of various types. This gap is around 60% short of authorised capacity. However, a defence source told Sputnik that the second-generation Konkurs lacks night fighting capabilities.

As per the report published in the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute`s (SIPRI) arms transfer database, the Indian Army had received approximately 7,000 upgraded Russian 9M113 Konkurs ATGMs in late 2015.

The Indian government had scrapped a $500 million deal with Israeli defence contractor Rafael Advanced Defence Systems Ltd. in favour of an indigenous ATGM system.

DRDO has designed and developed indigenous Surface-to-Air missile system AKASH and NAG Missile (3rd generation fire & forget Anti-Tank Guided Missile (ATGM)). A project for another ATGM has also been taken up.

Regarding ‘NAG’ & ‘NAMICA’ initial activities related to Production/Transfer of Technology (ToT) documentation & private/public production partners has been initiated.

300 Nag on 25 carriers will enter production, with more to follow.

Then there's the air launched Stand-off Anti Tank missile with a range of 20Km.

And there's the man-portable version.

All these are next generation compared to Konkurs and will be inducted pretty soon.

There is also a new project for a next gen anti-tank missile fired from battle tanks. So there are 5 ATGM projects in India currently.

Nag is the ultimate in next gen ATGM it surpasses FGM-148 Javelin.

Nag is a 42Kg missile while Javelin is 15Kg. Nag is much larger and meant to be fired from vehicles while Javelin is man portable, hence Nag can penetrate more than twice as much armour as the Javelin.

They are not in the same class, but both missiles are in the same generation. So Nag has a seeker which makes it fire and forget and is capable of top attack.

Also, unlike the Javelin, Nag also comes with an active seeker, which gives it all weather capability.

If you are making fun of somebody or something, it's good if you have actual subject knowledge before you attempt it.

That is a direct attack on the forum. :pdf:

What's interesting is a lot of Pakistanis here think they are mocking us, but are actually advertising our wares for us, while being ignorant of the help they have provided. :pakistan:

Do you think I would have been allowed to talk about the Javelin here had a Pakistani not brought the topic up first?
